I started simvastatin this summer. The last few weeks my legs and ankles began hurting now I have foot cramps that twist my feet and headaches. I'm going to stop and see if they go away. I've really been nauseous too. I've almost been thinking of asking the doctor for something for the nausea. I saw another question about this, but nobody said anything about how long it takes to get back to normal.
How long does it take a statin get out of your system my legs hurt?

I contacted my doctor by Email-Lab work is ordered for me-I'll have that done Monday. I quit looking at my PC-and went outside to watch the hounds and rub their tummies-
Added 21 Feb 2012:Since the seizure/cramps in the end of Oct. I'm getting worse. I have pins and needles attack my feet, calves fairly bad, and my hands a little bit. Last week-it became a gigantic problem. It's all over my body-and I want to throw up again. It's getting progressively worse. I'm also developing tremors in my hands and arms. My left tendon went down and is seeming to be well, but my right tendon flares up. Exercise and ice packs were helping-but It seems to have stopped progress. Does anybody have a clue about the pins and needles sensation?
Added 21 Feb 2012:I found out today that simivastatin stays in the system longer than other brands-longer half life-and it penetrates the muscles deeper. I am not a happy camper-- At least this stuff is on line for everybody now.
Added 6 April 2012:Ice helps with muscle pain. When you try to take trash out-walk to the bathroom-it inflames the damaged muscles and also the healthy muscles that are working extra hard. I spend an hour a day-icing my legs. My skin still gets creepy feeling- burning-not the muscles but skin.
Now when I get pain I throw up. I've had broken arms, legs, nose 2 times- broke horses. I'd sweat from pain-even collapse-but now I throw up and dehydrate-thank you modern medicine and FDA. I've found that heel lifts help the muscles-actually helps control the pain throught the body- Also, doing hamstring exercises help with pain-the creepy crawly skin. Now I can go out in a small yard and clean the dog poop up every day.
I'm starting physical therapy on Friday May 11, 2012. It's only for my right Achilles tendon. Just saw an abstract on Mendeley.com on a report by the ncbi.nim.nih that statin thins out the Achilles tendons and also thins out the heart muscles making you more prone to heart attacks. When I dehydrated, they did an MRI to see if I had gallstones-vomiting, black urine, nuasea, stomach pain-no fever. My heart is really good.
Added 3 Aug 2012:I'm getting a little better. My lean, wasp-waisted hounds are turning into jelly. The dog walker can't walk them every day. They have a life span of about 10 years, but with this life style, they probably will die from a stroke or heart attack in a few years. They try so hard to be amiable about the situation. Sometimes I'm up to walking them around the block. They're so happy, but they stand at a corner and look towards a paved trail that's over a mile away- we used to walk there 3 times a week. I'm a little bit heavier every week- and I was Flaca-skinny. I'm getting where I can dig in my yard-and am finishing a landscape project that I started before the statin hit me. I get so tired- my skin is okay now-but my stomach is bothering me a lot. I have IBS-and an active life helped my digestion. I'm trying to do some exercises-stretches to keep my body from crumpling up. The FDA doesn't care they ruined my life-killed my hounds-make my disabled son cry and fear.

I completely understand this. I have been on every statin and with each one it was headaches and muscle aches. Even Zetia was like that. I take fish oil and was taking CO-Q10. That was suppose to help with the aches.. but of course did not. My Doctor finally has referred me to a Cardiologist to see what else we can do. That appointment isn't for a few weeks yet. Hang in there... usually symptoms are better once the drug starts leaving your system..
This last week, I had 2 doctors say they didn't want to deal with me anymore. I was told that my legs would never heal and get over it. The other one said it was rare so quit bothering him. I thought we'd work on each problem as it came up- as it might or might not be a statin problem. I've really been nauseous for the last 2 days, which leads to dehydration. Tomorrow, I'm making an appt. to get something for nausea. I know that there are meds for that. I know that's caused by statins. I just take spells now. My doctor thinks that I like spending all day in ER, urgent care, and waiting for appointments. I was told that I like making trouble. I don't have money for hiring someone to clean the house. I hired a dog walker that was attacked by off leash dogs in the middle of a street yesterday. I trained my dogs to sit quietly, that usually causes a dog to change it's mind-and if it comes close-I spray with a dog repellent.
So my dogs sat until their walker was bit. The owners finally paid attention when their pit bulls were crying and being torn up. Mine sat back down when the owners pulled their bloody messes back across the street. I just had a feeling-and drove to check. My dogs were walking on a loose leash, the Stoner was baying a challenge to all other dogs-that he can kill a mountain lion-and he'd take them on too. I got the bloody mess in my car and home. Stoner and Missy hit the first dog before it could clamp down on their walker. So it was just a vein in one finger that was like a river. it was the other dogs blood on mine. They didn't even get an ear tattered or shredded. that's what statin has done to my life. I can't even go out with my dogs. If I got rich-I'd have my feet amputated and artificial feet put on.
hi quaffled,
I have been on 4 statin drugs and had problems with all of them. simvastatin, the last one just about did me in. still having problems and have been off of them for a month. see my doc thurs. will give and update. god bless, gramma 71
To Meyati,
I am so sorry and outraged that you had those responses from your doctors. You definately need to find another doctor who will pay some attention to you. Insulting a patient is never acceptable. You should report the doctor to where they work or to the medical licensing board.
Sara
myeti, the information was really helpful however we could of done without the whole dog story. Story was a waste of time.
Meyati,
I just read your posting from I think Feb. 22, which showed all the places you filed complaints with. GOOD FOR YOU! Wish there were more people like you. You are so right that our FDA should have posted better warnings for these statins. What a horror. Now I can't tell what is my fibromyalgia or from the statins that I repeatedly had problems with.
Thanks for your efforts.
Does anyone know what possible bad effects can occur from Zetia which is not a Statin?
Sara
I got Statin Toxicity fr statins. So Doc put me on Zetia after several yrs of arguing. The same thing has happened. The muscle pain, nausea, fainting all came back exactly the same. I stopped it a week ago and seem to still be in withdrawal.
Sorry to hear that. I got severe itching from Zetia.
Crap, still feel like crap, I had Polio as a kid so my leg muscles are weak anyway and it really hit my legs hard, nothing on the LIVALO site said any thing about this.
Meyati, I hope you haven't gotten permanent damage from the statins. What one were you one & what was the dose? I just printed out a FDA warning for my hubby who takes 80mg of Simvastin which is a bad one, well they all are for muscle & tendon damage. Once you get the damage it can't be reversed. Sign up for the MDA mednotes or Consumer Updates. I believe it was on Wednesday of this past week. You might still be able to pull it up. I wish you well my friend, & please let us know what the doc has to say. Oh, you did say simvastin I see rereading your question. Now that has me scared for you too, so please let us know. Try taking Vitamin C 1000mg a day & 250mg of magnesium & see if that helps. It does me when I get leg & toe cramps... Mary
I took simivastatin-it seems permenent damage. I'm 70--- I just started cleaning up the dog poop- nothing entergetic-my tendons flared up again- muscle weakness in the knees and hip- my skin feels on fire-like when your feet fall asleep. My specialist has been trying to recover from statins for about 5 years. Good news- I complained about the severe pain-Thurs I was able to pick up my first pain prescription. My doctor got hold of pharmeutical companies and got samples for me. But I have an actual prescription-it had be approved by medicare and the HMO- My doctor called in front of me, wrote things down- filled out papers-I took them to check out-then medicare and HMO said they were wrong. I began taking the name-date-and time of every stupid person that I talked to and submitted a grievance. I finally got hold of someone that called my doctor and sent him the proper paper work. I told them that I was going to my congressmen and contact the Surgeon general about this. I should have done this in November-
Good for you! Be proactive is the only way to get things done! Mary
When a doctor writes a script-and he shows you the HMO book approves it, you should be able to fill it. This is helping my doctor understand the rules until they change them. Apparently he wasn't able to talk to anybody in the system that had a clue.
ny & all of you that have had problems with the statins no matter the brand, should report it to the FDA immediately, as this is their only tool to get these drugs off the market. You can do as I told Meyeta, go to the FDA site & the give you the number to call & report it.Please... Mary
Mary, I notified the FDA-complained greatly about their inaccurate warnings, contacted the drug company, filed grievances with the HMO, registered and filed data with several medical research groups that are investigating these side effects. It took me from the end of October to Feb 16, 2012 to get a prescription filled for non-opiod pain killer. My doctor kept filling out papers, calling HMO supervisors. My stomach can't take Ibuprofin, etc. I'm allergic to Tylenol- I'm complaining about that too. Medical care in the US makes me sick.
It's odd, but when I began taking the statin, I'd wake up, thinking that I was dying-no symptoms-just that feeling. I got an update from UCSD, one of the research groups that I supplied data to-simivastatin takes longer to leave a person's body than other brands. It actually penertrates deeper into the muscles, causing more damage-that's what I was taking. It also informed me that the studies show it attacks the tendons-leaving them permently damaged. I hired a dog walker last night.
Oh, hon, I am so sorry. I'm not feeling well either. Let's get together & have a pity party. What you say? Take care... Mary
Okay-I know that you've had it hard. I just can't believe they let this stuff stay on the market. Don't people have enough problems. I do know that I'm not the only person that feels betrayed by the FDA and AMA.
You are never alone!!!
It saddens me to read in these posts that the effects -- at least muscle pains and aches -- are irreversible. My physician has not stated that at all. I am now off the drug for about 2 weeks and have been looking forward to getting my life back. For me, it was quite sudden after several years of taking the meds. Looking back, there were signs that this may be problem -- but so subtle that only restrospection permits only the faintness of clues -- however, muscle pain and weakness were "all of a sudden". Looking into alternate treatments now. If I cannot exercise, then that's a huge dent in regulating your cholesterol...
It took 90 days for me. Are you having to fight doctors? It's been horrible for me. I walked about 2-3 miles a day-went hiking for 7-10 miles.
I'm still so mad. I hired a dog walker so my dogs don't go crazy like me. I'm mad that they are just verifying French studies done in the 1990s-and the FDA and Internet are watering down the warnings. The Frrench say that people with hypothyroid have a 33% chance of having severe side effects-I have a hypothyroid. One NBC doctor said on the Today show that she will not take it-it destoys a healthy person's world. Have you looked up SpaceDoc. com I checked with some AF people and this man really was a AF flight surgeon. he says that he just about reached the point where he hardly remembered his name and stopped practicing medicine. He got off statins, and he's practicing medicine again, but he's all crippled up from statin.
Want to know something funny? I thought a dead mouse or something was behind my stove. I kept moving it out, cleaning cabinets. I kept smelling something rotten. It was the statin with olefactory hallucinations. I also thought that my battery was boiling and that I was smelling the sulfuric acid. My doctor thinks that I'm making this up and he gets mad.
I have one last suggestion. Try taking 500mg of magnesium a day. I thats helped me so much I can't belive it! Muscle, nerve, bone, & general immune problems. I feel better now than I have in 20 years! Hope this may help someone else. I normally take 125mg of magnesium along with my array of other supplements, but I buy them at BOGO sales, & the 500mg were all that were left. I thought well, why not. Can't hurt me & by golly it has helped with my arthritis, constipation, & pain in general! Can't hurt ot give it a try. Just a thought... Mary
Mary-I'll try it. I'm so tired of the skin on my legs creeping-sort of feeling like they are asleep. i have to have nerve damage. A friend suggested CoQ 10. Everybody says that it doesn't help after damage is done-but I seem to be getting some relief from it-If I forget to take it-the creepy skin starts again. On another site I'm writing people in their 40s that can't hold jobs any more and one young man can only hobble about 10 feet at a time. And the FDA is busy watering down the warnings. It added some, but they R watered down. need to go to bed and pretend that I'm still a human.
I tried statins to get my cholesterol down, crestor, simvastatin, lipitor, pravastatin, all gave me stiff achey legs, worse than they normally are. A friend recommended trying fish oil, so I'm taking Omega-3 fatty acids distributed by Trader Joe's here (in So California), has 1200 mg fish oil, 600 mg of EPA & DHA, and yesterday my cholesterol results came in normal. Am taking 1 in the morning and 2 at night. Every time I had stopped a statin I felt better right away. I had stopped pravastatin about a month and a half ago.
I have been on simvastatin for a long time I became a Vegan and after 6 months my Cholesterol dropped to 76 bad cholesterol dropped to 30 so I stopped taking statins altogether it has been a month now and no effect no pain no problems for those people who are have nausea try ginger tea or peppermint oil a couple drops on a cotton ball and just sniff it nausea goes away for pain use turmeric tea with a dash pepper or some coconut oil stop eating inflammatory food Google anti-inflammatory foods.
fmp6954, of all the posts here from people struggling to get a grip on this issue, it is evident that the ONE proven solution was hidden in your post. GO VEGAN! People insist on continuing to eat meat and will continue to pay for this transgression. With one adjustment in their lives, they can avoid heart trouble, cholesterol levels, cancer and obesity - go vegan added with mild exercise. Or else, continue your love affair with meatt and be miserablenall your lives.
I will testify about this drug pravastatin. It almost paralyzed me for a month , still getting it out of my system. I took it for 8 months until I start feeling adverse effects like cramps and muscle aches. Then started to numb my arms & legs and also made my neck ach. Had to sleep in a chair upright because I could not get out of bed, no strength . Took 2 MRI's, x-rays, 2 ultra sounds, blood work and nothing there. Stopped taking it and SLOWLY getting better but still ach. Did not need it in the first place, 130 cholesterol reading, doctor prescribed (x doctor now).
I'm having the same problems. I have been off the statin for a month and seeing a little improvement, but not much. Someone mentions that it could take months, I hope not.
hi diane,
i too have been off of simvastatin for a month and i still see little improvement. severe muscle pain, blurry vision, respiratory thing going on like a cold, legs ache so bad, headaches, etc, etc. what does your dr.say?
Ice helps with muscle pain.
Now I can go out in a small yard and clean the dog poop up every day-
thanks for the reply, mayeti. I will try icing the muscles. i appreciatte your tips. gramma71
I ice each leg 15 minutes four times a day after I do hamstring exercises. I do 4 stretches for 45 seconds four times a day. Also if the muscles start hurting or burning I use ice for 15 minutes. I also go got foot inserts and heels lifts. You can get these at Walmart. It took several months for relief. I couldn't sleep through the night, now I can- both of my achilles tendons seemed to bow overnight. It hurt to go to the bathroom-it still hurts to stand, but I can stand longer.
If you go to SpaceDoc.com, you'll see this could be lifelong problems. My son is a disabled vet 100%. The doctor told me that I should think of my son if I had a stroke-now he sits and cries. We hire a dog walker. We pay people to do what I had fun doing. I can't even unload my own truck after going to Home Depot. The house is filthy. A grandson comes over and mops.
I have been off simvastatin for over 2 months. I felt pretty good after a couple of weeks off of them, but when i do anything physical like walking, the muscles in my legs have such pain. My right knee is bothering me, and my achilles tendon all on the right. I have had problems with plantar fasciitis in the past, but have worn othotics for a couple of years after having the shots, and i have not had a problem until now. I get such sharp pains in my right calf and muscle in both legs hurt. I am on my feet all day at work so by the time i get home i am just screaming with pain. It is very frustating. I have been doing stetching exercises hoping that they will help. I guess it takes time to get back to normal, but i didnt think it would take this long. I walk with a limp most of the time. good luck to you, hope u feel better soon. gramma71
Sometimes they don't post my comments, etc. I feel for you. We're lucky that we aren't on walkers or wheelchairs. The statin blew both of my tendons. I have good days and bad. What i hate is the hot sweaty sleep and if the phones rings or something-I don't know where I am-Then my knees sometimes buckle. I'm not fat-but it shouldn't take every ounce of energy that i have to stand up.
I've BEEN OFF SIMVASTATIN 6 MONTHS AND STILL SHOULDERS HURT.
Side effects of Statins, particularly
Muscle pain
I don't know if you will see this because it was back in 2011. Now it is 2018. I am 70 years old and have been on statins for about 2 years because of high cholesterol. The Statin did bring down my cholesterol 100 points. But in the last month I noticed my back and hip area, my thighs and my upper arms were starting to ache. In the muscles. And it has increasingly got worse to now it's really hard to walk sometimes, I shuffle like an old lady. I used to walk every single day and have been healthy all my life. So this change is very upsetting to me. I went to my doctor and they told me to go off the statins immediately so that it's been one week ago. I have seen no change at all in my aching. How do you know it is the statins that is causing the pain in your body? Any comments? The doctor did run blood tests and took x-rays of my pelvic area and hips and it showed nothing. So I'm just guessing that it must be the statins and it must take a long time for it to get out of your system. I'm trying to find information on this. Thank you
To Meyati,
That's hard to believe that just after, was it several weeks of pain, cause you such lasting major injury? That's really too bad and shows how quick one needs to respond to muscle pain. I wonder what real damage could have been done to me from having the pain come up during 3 or 4 different statins which I did stop within 1 -2 days each time. I still have high cholesterol levels and I now take a vitamin called Cholest-off which are plant things of some sort. And again, anyone else with high cholesterol should try Zetia which is not a statin. Having high cholesterol increases your risk of a stroke which is a far more serious injury to the body and the mind.
And did I understand that in spite of your cholesterol doubling, that the level is low? Why in the world then did you ever take statins?
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. It is really appreciated.
Every time I went into the doctor I was nagged about just trying it, keep me healthy. I kept saying no and the doctor said look you really need to take it. I began to think that I'd loose my medical coverage and I don't have much money. My legs felt heavy-We had a forest fire that burned for over 90 days-had soot on my face at times, it was hot-Everybody in the area was sickly-then I had the cramps. The FDA doesn't say anything about heavy legs-but people that have severe damage get heavy legs. hypothyroid increases the chance of damage by 30%, atheletic-i walked about 2-10 miles a day-increases it by another 25%-new study just out. being female increses the chance of problems by 15%. I was like bambi in the middle of the road.
So sorry to hear all that. It sounds like your doctor was irresponsible.
The American medical community is irresponsible. He did what he had been taught-the HMO put pressure on him and all others to do this- the FDA isn't acting responsibley-They could stand up to drug companies and list the heavy legs-make the information availiable for patients-which would create more intelligent patients that would create pressure on doctors and HMOs
Yes, you sound right about that. Just curious as to what your cholesterol level was.
In range-but at the high end of the range. What makes me mad is that they keep lowering the acceptable range--That's not playing fair-- I do know that on the Gulf Coast they allow a higher cholestral count-which also seems unfair- to me it's VooDoo medicine thats run by drig companies to make a quick buck-big bucks at that.
Found out about statins- my doctor said stop immediately-no harm-no foul- in quitting suddenly. A friend of mine is dating a doctor-she asked him and he said the same thing-and it takes less than a week for it to get out of the system, but you suffer pain as the body heals, which is 3-4 weeks. It doesn't have steroids or other things where you need to taper off.
My last statin was on Wed. This am, I didn't have foot cramps, but I've been having foot and leg cramps off and on, and my calves are pretty much cramped. Also my feet are burning and tingling. My knees, ankles and other joints hurt.
Because I have thyroid trouble, the muscles can close in on the blood vessels in different places. They call it compartimentalized something or the other. Some thyroid patients have had their feet and hands amputated because of this. That's rare, but a series of surgery on the limbs to carve the muscle out and vein surgery does happen to some thyroid patients. Like I said to the pharmacist, "I don't have diabetes. My feet haven't been crushed in an accident. I shouldn't be having this discussion with anybody-and you don't know how long it takes for it to get this out of my body."
A person should be able to pick their own poison-everything has good and bad-works good for some-is detrimental to others. A person should be able to decide how they want to live-what they want to deal with. I keep telling them that I don't sit on the couch 24/7-get used to it; I have a life, leave me alone.
The lab work is already ordered-I'll be in the lab Monday am.
Yes, a side effect of statins can be all over body pain which means that the pills are destroying your body. That's why the docs say to get off of it right away. I took several different kinds of statins and kept getting the all over pain which I couldn't distinguish from my fibromyalgia or the statins. So no more statins.
But there is Zetia which is not a statin. The top cardiologist for cholesterol at the University of Michigan prescribed Zetia which also lowers cholesterol. One study said it didn't protect the cardiovascular system, but he disagreed. Unfortunately I had severe itching from taking it.
You owe it to yourself to try Zetia if you can't take statins. After having a major stroke, you really wouldn't want one which can paraylze you, stop you from being able to speak, other destructions and death.
P.S. for nausea, try Zofran. It even comes in a dissolvable pill that you don't need to drink any liquid to take it.
Their isn't anyway I want to take anything 4 cholestral. diet-cholestral doubled-still low. My specialist also has permenent muscle damage from statins. The pain just migrates from one part of the body to another. I wish my legs were amputated at the knees so I could have prosthetics like vets and walk and jog. The un-ruined muscles and tendons have to take up the slack-work harder-so I blew my tendons. Phys. therapy and home regime-i have to wake up over an hour early to spend my boring days icing my legs-15 a place, rub myself with linamints and do the exercises. I was walking over a mile a day-up to 10--in the mountains. The doctors say it's good that I stopped right away-and my urine stopped being black.
It doesn't even matter to me whether they would have told me or not I still would of taken it because I couldn't even imagine this could cause this much pain. I am waking up in severe pain in my legs and the pain on my stomach skin is excruciating. If I try to get up after the gym workout or try to stand after sitting I almost pass out from the pain. No matter what, they should of never approved this drug ever.
Thank you for this info. I'm getting rid of my Chrestor because I have many of the same symptoms. "Plus" a sever effect on my short term memory, after having a RCA stent put in march of this year and my doctor doubled the dose to 20 mg.
My cholesterol situation is heredity, so I'm looking into alternative MED's or solutions. My diet is already in good form and one less thing I need to consider.
when i was on a statin i didn't think it was hurting me till i weaned totally off it then i get another blood work done and my triglicerides were sky high again so i had enough pills left so i started back on them and in two days i was screaming in pain and was bedridden for days as i couldn't even walk. Threw them out told my doctor no more i will go natural and if i stoke out to bad i don't care as i cannot live in that much pain. your right about the cramping and headaches also. Since i quit them i also am not as nauseous either. I hate statin drugs as so many people have so many problems with them they should find something else before that's another thing on t.v. being advertised for suing over. When i weaned off i broke my pills in half first and started that way then slowly stared decreasing more till i was done with them. I think it took about a month as i didn't want to worry about withdrawal and maybe getting sick stopping suddenly.
Anytime i have taken myself off of something i just do it slowly as i don't care what the dr, thinks. If it was a narcotic that would be different to me. Well enough of me going on and on Get back to me after your off it and let me know how your feeling.Leron
Thank you Sarina--I'm Emailing my doctor. I don't feel like talking to him. He's a good doctor and this is the lowest paying state for doctors-I'm thinking that he's planning on relocating. I had headaches only once, after surgery. That lasted for about a year, until it dawned on a doctor that the anesthesia can give headaches that get progressively worse. I just don't get any. I've always been sort of queasy, and I had to take phenegran for nausea for about a year, but it's really bad. I'm getting sick while walking the hounds. Wed. I was thinking that I'd never go hiking again. I kept thinking that legs were listed as a side effect. What bothers me is that I take an anti-cramp/spasm medication for my spastic stomach. I just shouldn't be having this problem.
See your doctor - immediately!
Tell her/him about your symptoms to rule out any other conditions.
No one should stop their prescribed meds without consulting the doctor first.
Be safe. Be well.
Listen to your twin girl! You may need lisinopril to stop the ankel swelling or something else . Call your doc as suggested my friend...
I don't have swelling just cramps, burning and tingling. Real tender too. If they had swelled, I'd have gotten hold of the doctor immediately-seems that I usually have atypical symptoms, which causes problems-or several small things at the same time-that makes it look like I have something serious. Usually when a person has a vitamin B deficiency, they R anemic 2. I wasn't anemic, so they kept having MRIs to look for brain cancer or mini-strokes, as the symptoms got worse.
screw the dr..He said my shoulder pain couldn't have come from simvastatin but in my 68 years I have never had shoulder pain before and it started after taking it.
If I'm prescribed a drug, like a statin, where there are volumes of data circulating as to it's dangers, and I develop a serious irreversible side-effect as a result, that doctor better be finding a deep hole in Siberia to disappear into, because I may be coming with needle nospliers and a blow torch.
