I just started taking Depo on April 21, 2014 (three days after I had a miscarrige). Got mine from Planned Parenthood since I didn't have a primary care doctor at the time.
I'm 30 and I currently do not have any children. My goal was to prevent further pregnancies until I can adjust my medication (I'm on Lithium).
The rest of April and all of May I didn't experience a period or any spotting (my guess, hormones readjusting). Now I've been spotting since June 1st.
I've had some blood work done (required because I'm on Lithium) and I found that both my white blood cell (WBC) and platelet counts are high.
My result: 11.7 K/UL
Normal: 4.0 - 11.0
- Not to high above the max, but I'm still concerned.
My result: 503 K/UL
Normal: 130 - 400
- High platelet count can cause clots (This information was given to me by my psychiatrist when I asked if I should be worried about high platelet counts).
Based on some research that my psychiatrist and I have done, my high counts can be related to Depo. Apparently, this is a side effect.
I'm just curious if anyone here has had some blood work done and found abnormal values since starting Depo.
I was never informed that Depo could cause high WBC and platelet counts or infertility. I'm hoping that the few months I've been on Depo doesn't hurt my chances of becoming pregnant when I'm ready.
I've got a doctor's appointment on June 30th to find out if there are any other possible causes for my high WBC and platelet counts.
I do like the idea of taking Agnus Castus as LousArk suggested. I'll have to give it a shot depending on what my doctor finds.
I'll post an update after my doctor's appointment.

I have had three children and began having the depo provera injection after my third child. I had 3 injections in total then went off it due to side effects and me just not feeling right.
That was 14 years ago now, I am 35 and have had 2 miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy.
14 years of trying without success. I believe it is due to the depo provera injection. I easily conceived beforehand resulting in three children. I went from a healthy, young mum of three to a woman suffering from chronic abdominal pain that could not be explained or treated and still no babies. Very sad. The manufacturers should be held accountable. Depo provera ruined my life!

To be honest I have been on depo twice. Once when I was 19 and got my period back right away pretty much. then again when 20-21. Both of these times I only got three shots. I have been off the shot for almost a year and still no sign of my period. I am worried it took away my fertility to be honest. I plan to make a doctors visit to see the possibility as to why I am not hAvj g a period is possibily because I am now infertile. I would never recommend the. Shot to anyone

Omg! I was just told the other day by a friend that she heard how depo could be the cause of infertility. I too was never told that this could be a side effect. I was put on depo by my mother when I was 14. I continued to be injected until 2008 when IKE hit. After that, being fortunitly forced to see another doctor, I was told to stop. However, only saying the reason was that it could deplete your bone density. Nothing still about infertility. I discussed with every nurse I saw when receiving these shots that my periods were not normal, to even the point of stopping completely. All that was said was this was "normal", and I continued not to question. Even since IKE, thinking that I would go back to normal, my periods have not. Only being either extremely light, to none at all. I too have been to the ER for a ruptured cyst in 2009, but with every doctor explaining that these side effects are "normal".
Since stopping depo, I have been in a relationship for going on our 7th year, we have been tring to start our family with no success. Thinking of other factors, I put it away as we just aren't ready for this gift yet. Unfortunately, more worries have pushed me into thinking something worse. Sex now has also gotten to the point of painful, and funny enough every time it starts to hurt, my description of where, is my ovary. After reading yalls messages, and a few of enlarged ovaries, before I was just thinking maybe it was what we were doing. Now there will be no hesitation to call yet another doctor come Monday. If they confirm that there is a serious problem, and due to taking depo. My next step will be calling a prescription law firm. From what im hearing, and you all already confirming my worries that in my heart I already knew. One of my biggest dreams is to become a mom, if thats been taking, LORD help the people who took it. I hope that you all do the same, and fight. Im not big on protests or making a seen, but not fighting for what's right, is wrong. Im sorry but THIS IS WRONG! Wrong for you woman who have already suffered. Wrong for the woman, like me, who didn't know, and wrong for the woman young and old who are still being told that this drug is an option. Please, respond to my post. One voice can start it, but these days never enough to finish. If something was already started to put an end to this, please let me know, and I will gladly put more volume to your voice.

I was on depo for five years. However, my doctor informed me that it could cause infertility, and that was in 2006. I have never wanted biological children so I was okay with it. It's up to health care professional to know and give a complete run down of the possible side effects. If your health care provider says that they were unaware, they are not being honest with you, because it was something that the manufacturer made very clear. I would go after the health care provider because the manufacturer is covered. The health care provider did not do their job properly and did not inform you of this possible side effect. I do not believe this birth control should be marketed to women who wish to have children eventually but is great for women such as myself.

After having my second son at the age of 23, fourteen months after my first, I decided Depo might be for me as it was pushed by my Dr.
I am turning 32 next month and I still to this day have not been able to get pregnant and I have irregular periods.
THIS SHOT RUINED A PART OF MY LIFE! I never would have taken it if I knew I would not be able to have more children!
Looking back I wish...

Wow this is really shocking reading these responses. I'm 29 yrs old and I've been on the depo shot for 5 yrs now. My period stopped when I got my first shot. I didn't have a period for 4 yrs. Then suddenly my period started and now I haven't had a period for one year. I'm nowhere near a position to have kids right now but I would like to have kids in the future. I've never heard anything about this being bad for your fertility. I thought no period was great because my periods are awful.

It was a long time ago when I used the provera. I can't say that it can cause infertility but I can say that it can cause birth defects in an unborn child. I used it only twice and the second time I didn't know that I was pregnant. I consulted a health care provider who suggested that it would more than likely cause severe birth defects. I was suggested to abort the pregnancy. I lost the baby anyway so not sure if that was part of the reason. I don't know what your taking the depo for but I would definitely talk to my doctor more about the problems it can cause. Not to scare you but to make you more aware and ask your doctor these questions.

Hi! I just turned 20 and my fiance and I have been together for 2 years. I was on depo for 2 years and have been off of it for 2 years. I just got my first period again about 7 months ago and my fiance and I immediately began trying to concieve. Ive taken ovulation tests everyday from the day after my period to the day before my next and never had a positive result. My periods were regular up until about 2 months ago. I began having 2 periods a month usually just a few days apart. STILL NO OVULATION!!! Im getting very worried but have not had time to see my doctor. Oh I also had a miscarriage 3 months into my pregnancy about a month before starting depo. Praying everything is okay. We really want kids!!

I'm not sure if I will be able to have more kids after getting my first and only shot last week. I only got the shot to make sure my body would have a chance to heal up after having a horrible 20 week miscarriage ( I had to have a 20 unit blood transfusion). Anyway I've been doing a lot of research about depo and infertility, especially after reading the posts here, I feel so bad for the women who may never become moms and pray that the information I've found may help those of you who can't conceive and those who are having bleeding and other issues due to this poisonous shot. The info on natural fertility websites seems promising as well as this one supplement(did a whole lot of research on that) called wobenzyme N. It has 5 powerful enzymes in it. It has been used in Germany for over 40years to treat all kinds of things. It may get rid of cysts and help hormonal balance and repair the damage caused by the shot.
I've read studies about it actually helping cancer patients along with many, many other ailments. It was originally created for inflammation and joint health, but over the past 40 years has proven extremely useful for so many other things ( found it on a fertility site and went from there). I ordered it and it should be at my house by the 12th. I'm even going to have my mom start taking it. I would start out on it slow if you have stomach problems, I've read of a few people getting diariah when they start out on recommended dose it has detoxifying affects, which is good, but if you have a lot in your system to clean out or plaque in your arteries, I would start slow. One of the many reasons I'm gonna take it is to try getting the depo poison out of my body. Good luck and God bless you all.

So it's been a few years since I posted this and I have now had an abortion due to circumstances I'd rather not discuss. But I am now expecting a baby but I'm only in the first 2 months. But I am also going threw a bunch of surgeries due to cronic pain in my abdomen which has no explanation yet so if I can keep the baby or not is still in discussion. But the moral of the story is I can have a baby.
