I have a RX for 2 mg Xanax. I get the generic Alprazolam, green bar, s 90 3. It is marked with 3 score lines, but I am not sure what they mean or if it is okay to cut it in half or 3rds. 2 mgs works great for me if I am having an anxiety attack, but if I just need help falling asleep, it is too much. I end up with a "hangover" the next morning.
Can I break my 2mg green bar Alprazolam in half for a smaller dose?

The 2mg Xanax is double scored, you’re correct. The white and yellow bars are tri scored, so each piece if broken in 4s are .5 mg, to equal a total of 2mgs if taken the whole pill. However, the green (hulks, as I like to call them hulks lol) are double scored , making it only able to be broken into 3 pieces, not 4. So the middle piece is 1mg, and the 2 on the outside equal .5, for a total of 2mgs. Hope this helps

I have never seen a green bar but have been on xanax (alprazolam) for over 15 years. i am prescribed 2 mg 3 times a day or as needed. the 3 lines are score lines which tell you where to cut them. You don't take them in thirds. you take them 4ths. Thus if you cut on each line you will get 4 equal parts each part being 1/2 (.5) mg. so if you take 2 of the pieces or 1/2 of the pill it will be 1 mg. Always cut on the scores as you get equal amounts of medicine. The can also easily be broken on the score lines with your fingers. just fyi, they also come round and work on the same principle. doses are usually, .25mg, .50mg, 1mg and 2mg. Hope this helps.

Hello, I have a question. The alprazolam 2mg (green) bar, is scored twice. You say “you don’t take it in 3’s, you take it in 4’s”.
However since it is scored twice, that only leaves 3 pieces, not 4. Maybe your alprazolam is scored different? In order to get 4 pieces, I would have to cut one of the pieces in half, but if I do that I don’t know how much of the medicine I’m getting. The scoring is meant for splitting the dose up, but if you split a non scored piece, you don’t know how much of the medicine your actually taking. I’m use to take lorazepam 1mg, but I feel Xanax will be way to much, I’m even hesitant to take one of the 3 pieces. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I can see no reason why you can't cut it in half or thirds. It doesn't appear to have any special coatings.

No it doesn't have any special coatings. I assume it is okay, but this is a new RX for me and I am ignorant when it comes to medications. Because I do not know what the s 90 3 mean, I didn't know if each section could contain different things or not. Sounds ridiculous now that I type my thoughts out, but I guess that's all part of my anxiety!! ;o)

I don't blame you for being nervous about it, call your pharmacist/chemist about it if you want a definitive answer. That should make you less anxious about splitting them.

You can certainly break that pill into 3rds. (Or in as many pieces you want to).
The numbers you see on each section of the pill are for id purposes.
On some pills you'll see the name of the drug, the manufacturer, the milligrams,etc. Just remember, if you cannot get help via a friend here, you can also look under the pill identifier section of this same website
Always good to be sure you can break the pill before you do. Made that mistake once.Only once. All it took for me to do some research...
