Does Abilify cause weight gain?

Answers

WildcatVet 2 May 2024

Hi, Wasty!
As masso explained so well, Abilify is considered to be more weight neutral because any changes could go either way:
"Very common (10% or more of users): Increased weight (up to 20%)
Common (1% to 10% of users): Anorexia, decreased appetite, increased appetite, weight decreased, weight loss of at least 7%".
Some people gain, some people lose, and most people feel no change at all.
Best regards,
Wildcat
PS, I took Abilify for many years and didn't gain, I just stayed my normal weight.

I take 15 mgs of this antipsychotic and have not gained any weight, of course everyone is different.

Here is my answer for the same question dated 14 March 2023.

Abilify is an antipsychotic medication which affects your metabolism and in general antipsychotics may increase weight gain but specifically with Abilify it may also cause weight loss, increased/decreased appetite and may even cause anorexia.
It depends how your organism reacts to the drug, some people may put on weight, some stay the same and others lose weight. Everyone reacts differently to the medication, benefits, potential risks, side effects, interactions, etc..

"In addition to weight gain, antipsychotics are also known to impair glucose metabolism, increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels and cause arterial hypertension, leading to metabolic syndrome."
