Fowl Laryngotracheitis Vaccine

Modified Live Virus

For Veterinary Use Only

Read in full, follow directions carefully.

This product has been shown to be effective for the vaccination of healthy chickens 10 days of age or older against infectious laryngotracheitis. Duration of immunity has not been established. For more information regarding efficacy and safety data, go to productdata.aphis.usda.gov.

Store at 2°-8°C. Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures and/or direct sunlight may adversely affect potency. Do not freeze.

Use entire contents when first opened.

Inactivate unused contents before disposal.

Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.

Contains gentamicin as preservative.

Do not mix with other products, except as specified on this label.

Vaccinate birds when they are 4 weeks of age; or, if conditions dictate, birds may be vaccinated as early as 10 days of age.

Historically, revaccination of replacement birds with this product was recommended at 16 to 20 weeks of age. The need for booster vaccinations has not been established for this product; consultation with a veterinarian or the manufacturer is recommended. Should an outbreak of laryngotracheitis occur on the premises, immediately institute a program of vaccination of birds farthest from the infected and work towards the diseased birds.

Directions

For intraocular vaccination (1,000 dose bottles only)

1. To rehydrate 1 vial of vaccine with 1 vial of diluent, remove aluminum seal and rubber stopper from vaccine vial and diluent bottle. Avoid contamination of the stoppers and the contents.

2. Half-fill the vaccine vial with diluent.

3. Replace the stopper and shake the vial until vaccine material is dissolved.

4. Carefully pour the rehydrated-dissolved vaccine into the plastic diluent bottle. Replace the bottle stopper and shake once again to obtain a uniform mixture.

5. Remove diluent-bottle closure and fit drop dispenser into bottle. The vaccine is now ready for use.

6. To vaccinate intraocularly, hold bird and place 1 drop of vaccine into the eye. Allow the vaccine to spread over the eye before releasing the bird into a holding area for vaccinated birds.

For drinking-water vaccination

This vaccine is recommended for the vaccination of healthy chickens 10 days of age or older.

1. Discontinue use of medications or sanitizing agents in the drinking water 24 hours before vaccinating. Do not resume use for 24 hours following vaccination.

2. Water used for the drinking water administration of a live virus vaccine must be non-chlorinated.

3. Provide enough waterers so two-thirds of the birds may drink at one time. Scrub waterers with fresh, clean, non-chlorinated water and use no disinfectant. Let the waterers drain dry.

4. Turn off automatic waterers, so the only available water is the vaccine water. Do not give vaccine water through medication tanks.

5. Withhold water for 2 to 4 hours before vaccinating. Do not deprive the birds of water if the temperature is extremely high.

6. Remove seal from vaccine vial.

7. Remove stopper and half-fill vial with clean, cool, non-chlorinated water.

8. Replace stopper and shake until dissolved.

9. Use a clean container two-thirds filled with cool, clean, non-chlorinated water. Add dried milk at a rate of 31.25 ounces (887.5 grams) per 62.5 gallons (237.5 liters) of the final volume of vaccine solution. Stir the mixture until the dried milk is dissolved.

10. Add the rehydrated vaccine from the vial and again stir the contents thoroughly.

11. Next, add the mixture to the final volume of water, as follows:

12. Give 1 dose of vaccine per bird.

13. Distribute the final volume of (vaccine) water evenly among the clean waterers. Do not place the waterers in direct sunlight. Resume regular water administration only after all the vaccine water has been consumed.

For Spray Vaccination

This vaccine may be used for the vaccination of healthy chickens 10 days of age or older by spraying the vaccine solution above the chickens. A sprayer that delivers a coarse spray quickly and evenly is recommended.

1. Remove seal from a vial of vaccine.

2. Remove the stopper and half-fill vial with cool, distilled water.

3. Replace stopper and shake until vaccine is in solution.

4. Pour rehydrated vaccine into a clean container and add 100 mL cool, distilled water per 1,000 doses vaccine. Shake thoroughly.

5. Apply at the rate of 100 mL rehydrated vaccine per 1,000 birds.For example, 5,000 birds will require 500 mL rehydrated vaccine or 10,000 birds will require 1 liter of rehydrated vaccine. Place the vaccine solution in the sprayer canister, set the discharge control for a coarse spray (droplet size of 75 to 120 microns) and walk through the house. Direct the spray above the heads of the birds.

6. This spray method of vaccination should be employed in poultry houses where air movement can be reduced to a minimum. Before spraying the vaccine solution, close the house and shut off mechanical ventilation. Maintain these conditions both during spraying and for 20 minutes afterwards.

7. Wear goggles and a face mask while spraying.

8. Any sprayer used for application of a live virus vaccine should be used for no other purpose.

PRECAUTIONS

1. Rehydrate the vaccine outside the pens. Rehydrate 1 vial at a time and use entire contents immediately after rehydration. Do not stretch the number of doses to a larger number of birds than recommended: 1 dose per bird.

2. Vaccinate all susceptible birds on the premises at the same time.

3. Vaccinate healthy birds only.

4. A mild conjunctival reaction may occur approximately 4 days following vaccination. This occurs more often in dry, dusty houses than in well-managed quarters. Such a reaction will disappear in about 3 days.

5. Take care not to spill or spatter the vaccine. As a precautionary measure, curb traffic for 10 to 14 days between premises where birds have been vaccinated and areas where there are nonvaccinated susceptible birds.

Laryngo-Vac Caution

The use of this vaccine is subject to state laws, wherever applicable.

Use only on premises with a history of infectious laryngotracheitis.

Records

Keep a record of vaccine serial number and expiration date; date of receipt and date of vaccination; where vaccination takes place, and any reactions observed.
