CalciCure Fresh Cow Bolus

This treatment applies to the following species:
Company: Vedco

Oral Calcium Nutritional Supplement

Milky White to Yellowish Colored Solid

An oral calcium supplement for use around parturition in fresh dairy cows, for fast and sustained release of calcium supplement.

The CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus disintegrates completely within 60 minutes following administration to cows. The calcium chloride dissolves quickly in the rumen, while the calcium sulfate dissolves only after being converted to a soluble salt by the ruminal microflora, which provides a sustained release of calcium supplement. Each bolus has a Palm Oil coating that aids in the mechanical administration of the bolus.

Minimum Feeding Protocol:

1st CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus immediately after calving; and 2nd CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus 12 to 24 hours after calving.

Extended Feeding Protocol - For high yielding dairy cows, and for cows with a previous history of milk fever upon freshening:

1st CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus at the first signs, or onset of parturition;

2nd CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus immediately after calving;

3rd CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus 12 to 24 hours after calving; and

4th CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus 24 to 48 hours after calving.

For dairy cows with clinical signs of milk fever, administer 1 CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus 2 to 3 hours following the intravenous administration of Vedco UltiGiene® Calcium Gluconate 23% Solution.

For best results, discuss a proposed administration protocol with your Herd Nutritionist, or with your Veterinarian.

Administer CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus using a suitable bolus applicator (see Feeding Instructions).

CalciCure® Fresh Cow Boluses must not be given to cows with clinical signs of milk fever as the swallowing reflex may be impaired.

Do not give CalciCure® Fresh Cow Boluses to cows lying down.

Do not use excessive force when administering the CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus to cows.

Do not administer CalciCure® Fresh Cow Bolus if the coating on the bolus becomes damaged, or if the bolus is broken.

Feeding Instructions:

Step 1: Place the bolus in a suitable bolus applicator, with the rounded end pointing outward. If right-handed, place yourself at the cow’s right side. (Graphic 1: Bolus being placed into the applicator)

Step 2: Grab the cow’s upper jaw with your left hand. Keep the cow’s head at a natural position and a little towards yourself. Gently guide the loaded bolus applicator into the cow’s mouth. (Graphic 2: Loaded bolus applicator introduced into the cow’s mouth.)

Step 3: When you feel resistance, gently guide the loaded bolus applicator over the tongue. When the loaded bolus applicator is pushed beyond the tongue into the throat of the cow, squeeze the handle of the applicator to release the bolus. (Graphic 3: Loaded bolus applicator is pushed beyond the tongue into the cow’s throat.)

Step 4. Wait a moment for the cow to swallow the bolus, then remove the applicator. (Graphic 4: Unloaded applicator being removed, and bolus being swallowed by the cow)
