Symptom Checker

Step 4: Read and complete the decision guide to learn more about your symptoms.

Difficulty Passing Urine

Contact your doctor immediately! Passing less than two cups of urine per day is abnormal, and often signals severe kidney problems. Other causes of low urine production include

  • severe dehydration

  • blockage of the bladder or urethra (uncommon).

You should have an urgent medical evaluation. If there is any possibility that your low urine production is caused by severe dehydration, it might be helpful to start by drinking at least one to two pints (16 to 32 ounces) of water or juice.
