For the Consumer
Applies to chlorpheniramine / codeine: oral liquid, oral suspension, oral tablet
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking chlorpheniramine / codeine: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Stop using chlorpheniramine and codeine and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:
-
confusion, mood changes, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior;
-
severe dizziness or drowsiness, feeling like you might pass out;
-
severe nervousness, fast or uneven heart rate, tremor, seizure (convulsions);
-
pain or numbness in the arms or legs;
-
severe stomach cramps or constipation;
-
weak or shallow breathing;
-
easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; or
-
urinating less than usual or not at all.
Less serious side effects of chlorpheniramine / codeine may include:
-
dizziness, drowsiness, tired feeling;
-
dry mouth, nose, or throat;
-
blurred vision;
-
nausea, vomiting, constipation; or
-
sleep problems (insomnia).

Cardiovascular
Cardiovascular side effects have included fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat, hypertension, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, palpitation, shock-like state, and syncope.
Nervous system
Nervous system side effects have included blurred, double, or other visual disturbances; confusion; dizziness; depression; drowsiness and sedation; headache; euphoria; facial dyskinesia; false sense of well-being; feeling faint, lightheadedness, general feeling of discomfort or illness; nervousness, agitation and restlessness; minimal sedation; somnolence; insomnia, dyskinesia, irritability, and tremor.
Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included abdominal distension, abdominal pain, acute pancreatitis, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, dyspepsia, epigastric distress, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and decreased gastric motility with increased likelihood of esophageal reflux.
Respiratory
Respiratory side effects have included dryness of pharynx and respiratory passages, laryngismus, nasal stuffiness, wheezing or troubled breathing, and respiratory depression.
Endocrine
Endocrine side effects have included changes in glucose utilization, decreased lactation, early menses, glycosuria, gynecomastia, hypoglycemia, increased appetite, increased libido, and pheochromocytoma stimulation.
Dermatologic
Dermatologic side effects have included dermatitis, excessive perspiration, urticaria, erythema, pruritus, and rash.
Hypersensitivity
Hypersensitivity side effects have included allergic laryngospasm, atelectasis, bronchospastic allergic reaction, hives, itching, and swelling of face.
Ocular
Ocular side effects have included blurred vision, diplopia, hypermetropia, lacrimation increased, mydriasis, and photophobia.
General
General side effects have included asthenia, feeling of relaxation, redness or flushing of the face, and unusual tiredness or weakness.
Other
Other side effects have included labyrinthitis, tinnitus, and vertigo.
Immunologic
Immunologic side effects have included drug fever.
