Side Effects by Body System

Metabolic

Metabolic side effects have included hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria.

When calcium is administered for prolonged periods, hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria may result. These conditions are more likely in patients with hypoparathyroidism who are also receiving large amounts of milk. Signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia include anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, dry mouth, and thirst.

Genitourinary

Genitourinary side effects have rarely included hypercalciuria and calcium nephrolithiasis.

Prolonged administration of calcium salts can result in hypercalciuria and the development of calcium nephrolithiasis in some cases, particularly during coadministration of loop diuretics.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have been reported rarely. They have included nausea and constipation.
