Peginterferon alfa-2b Pregnancy and Breast Feeding Warnings

Overview

Do not use Peginterferon alfa-2b if you are pregnant. Do not become pregnant for 6 months after you stop treatment with Peginterferon alfa-2b . Use an effective form of birth control during treatment with Peginterferon alfa-2b and for 6 months after you stop treatment. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Peginterferon alfa-2b while you are pregnant. It is not known if Peginterferon alfa-2b is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Peginterferon alfa-2b .

Peginterferon alfa-2b Pregnancy Warnings

Peginterferon alfa-2b has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. When used with ribavirin, the combination therapy has been assigned to pregnancy category X by the FDA. Animal studies with non-pegylated interferon alfa-2b have revealed evidence of abortifacient effects. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Peginterferon should only be given during pregnancy when benefits outweigh risks.

The manufacturer states that the drug is recommended for use in fertile women only when they are using effective contraception during the treatment period.

Peginterferon alfa-2b Lactation Warnings

There are no data on the excretion of peginterferon alfa-2b into human milk. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
