Levofloxacin ophthalmic Pregnancy Warnings

Levofloxacin ophthalmic has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of harm to the fetus at 7000 times the human dose. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Levofloxacin ophthalmic is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

There are no data on the excretion of levofloxacin ophthalmic in human milk. Systemically administered ofloxacin is excreted into human milk in small amounts. The manufacturer recommends caution when administering levofloxacin ophthalmic to nursing women.
