Dexamethasone / neomycin / polymyxin b ophthalmic Pregnancy Warnings
Dexamethasone/neomycin/polymyxin B ophthalmic has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have shown dexamethasone to be teratogenic in mice and rabbits following multiple dose topical ophthalmic application. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Dexamethasone/neomycin/polymyxin B ophthalmic is only recommended for use during pregnancy when there are no alternatives and benefit outweighs risk.
Corticosteroids have been shown to produce fetal resorptions and cleft palate in mice. In addition, they have produced fetal resorptions and multiple abnormalities involving the head, ears, limbs, and palate in rabbits.
Dexamethasone / neomycin / polymyxin b ophthalmic Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of dexamethasone/neomycin/polymyxin B ophthalmic into human milk. Topically applied steroids have been reported to be absorbed systemically. The manufacturer recommends caution when administering dexamethasone/neomycin/polymyxin B ophthalmic to nursing women.
