Using mycophenolic acid together with sirolimus may increase the effects of mycophenolic acid. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop fever or chills, a sore throat, unusual bleeding or bruising, mouth sores, abdominal pain, pale stools, or darkened urine. These symptoms could be early signs of dangerous side effects. Mycophenolic acid may also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and unusual bleeding or bruising. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or special test to safely use both medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medications without first talking to your doctor.

Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with sirolimus and could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while you are taking sirolimus. Also, you should preferably take sirolimus at least one hour before eating. If you do take it with food, you should take it each time with food to avoid changes in sirolimus levels. The oral liquid form of sirolimus must be mixed with water or orange juice only. Do not use grapefruit juice to mix this medication.

Take mycophenolic acid on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Food may reduce the absorption of mycophenolic acid. This will make it easier for your body to absorb the medication. Do not crush, chew, or cut the tablets. The tablets have a special coating to protect the stomach from irritation.
