ADJUST DOSING INTERVAL: Coadministration with rifampin may variably decrease the plasma concentrations of atorvastatin due to induction of its metabolism via CYP450 3A4 . Rifampin also inhibits the hepatocyte update transporter, OATP1B1. Administration of atorvastatin after rifampin results in significantly decreases in atorvastatin plasma concentrations. Rifampin has been reported to decrease the AUC of atorvastatin by an average of 78% compared to placebo.
MANAGEMENT: To minimize the interaction, the manufacturer recommends that atorvastatin and rifampin doses should be administered simultaneously. Monitoring for adequate hypolipidemic effect is advisable.
