Interactions between your drugs

Major

carBAMazepine hemin

Applies to: Epitol (carbamazepine) and hemin

Consumer information for this interaction is not currently available.

GENERALLY AVOID: Coadministration with drugs that are capable of increasing the activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid synthetase (e.g., estrogens, barbiturates, steroid metabolites, rifampin) may negate the pharmacologic effect of hemin. In the treatment of porphyria, hemin is thought to limit the rate of porphyrin/heme biosynthesis by inhibiting delta-aminolevulinic acid synthetase, thus any induction of this enzyme would be expected to counteract the therapeutic effect of hemin.

MANAGEMENT: Drugs capable of increasing the activity of delta-aminolevulinic acid synthetase should be avoided during hemin therapy.

Drug and food interactions

Moderate

carBAMazepine food

Applies to: Epitol (carbamazepine)

You should preferably avoid the regular consumption of grapefruits and grapefruit juice while taking carBAMazepine. This can cause carBAMazepine levels to increase. You should report signs of carBAMazepine side effects such as nausea, visual disturbances, dizziness, or muscle weakness to your doctor. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with carBAMazepine. Alcohol can increase the nervous system side effects of carBAMazepine such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Drug Interaction Classification

These classifications are only a guideline. The relevance of a particular drug interaction to a specific individual is difficult to determine. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any medication.
Major Highly clinically significant. Avoid combinations; the risk of the interaction outweighs the benefit.
Moderate Moderately clinically significant. Usually avoid combinations; use it only under special circumstances.
Minor Minimally clinically significant. Minimize risk; assess risk and consider an alternative drug, take steps to circumvent the interaction risk and/or institute a monitoring plan.
Unknown No interaction information available.
