Definition of Hemochromatosis:

Hemochromatosis is a condition in which there is too much iron in the body. There are two types:
  • Primary hemochromatosis is a genetic disorder where too much iron is absorbed into the digestive tract. Iron builds up in the body, especially the liver.
  • Secondary (acquired) hemochromatosis is due to other blood-related disorders (such as thalassemia or certain anemias) or many blood transfusions.
