Cardiomyopathy Prophylaxis Medications

Definition of Cardiomyopathy Prophylaxis:

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle, causing the heart muscle to become enlarged, thick or rigid. These changes weaken the ability of the heart to pump blood around the body and weaken its electrical activity. This can lead to heart failure and rhythm problems (arrythmias). There are three different types of cardiomyopathy depending on physical heart changes. Causes are often unknown but may include drinking too much alcohol over long periods of time, genetics or exposure to certain infections. Symptoms vary according to type and can include tiredness, weakness, shortness of breath, fluid retention especially in the legs, chest pain and palpitations. The goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms, treat the cause if known and to prevent further damage.
