Managing Diabetes during Sick Days

Sick day management is a plan you develop with your diabetes care team to control your blood sugar level when you are sick. Your blood sugar level can rise because of stress from illness, surgery, or injury. Your plan will help prevent high blood sugar levels and other serious health conditions.

What to drink and eat while you are sick:

If you cannot have meals, eat or drink about 50 grams of carbohydrate. Do this every 4 hours that you are awake during the day to help prevent low blood sugar levels. Your healthcare provider may give you specific directions based on your daily carbohydrate targets. Each of the liquids and foods listed below has about 10 to 15 grams of carbohydrate.
