Hi everyone. Started 75mgs 3 days ago and already ankles and feet swelling. Same happened on Mirtazapine after a week and was advised by GP to stop taking as she wouldn't be able increase the dose with those side effects. However, different GP has just said over phone, via receptionist, to carry on with the Venlafaxine as it's only been a few days. Has anyone had this side effect? Did it settle down? Or did you have to stop thankyou.

Edema, swelling, and fluid retention are reported side effect of venlafaxine but side effects generally resolve within days to a week or two. Most people don't have to stop the medication.
If it persists you should try reaching your doctor again. I wonder if a temporary reduction in your dosage might let your system adjust more smoothly. Just a thought...

Thankyou. I am just worried as I had the same reaction from Mirtazapine and it just got worse within 5 weeks, on the lowest dose. That GP wouldn't increase the dose because of the swelling. (It is for quite severe depression and anxiety. So increase was needed) x

Peripheral edema is common with mirtazapine which is an atypical antidepressant. Venlafaxine is in a different class called SNRI's and it only causes edema in rare cases. Hopefully your edema will resolve much sooner than you experienced with the mirtazapine.
