Got an Itch? Mouse Study May Help Explain Why

Posted 23 May 2013 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, May 23 – The sensation of itching is hardwired into the nervous system and can be traced back to a small molecule released in the spinal cord, according to a new study in mice. Researchers say this molecule, known as natriuretic polypeptide b (Nppb), triggers a signal that passes through the central nervous system. Ultimately, this signal is experienced as an itch. Since the nervous systems of humans and mice are similar, the researchers concluded that a similar process probably occurs in people. "Our work shows that itch, once thought to be a low-level form of pain, is a distinct sensation that is uniquely hardwired into the nervous system with the biochemical equivalent of its own dedicated landline to the brain," study senior author Mark Hoon, a scientist at the U.S. National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, said in an institute news release. The findings ... Read more

Health Tip: Caring for Baby's Heat Rash

Posted 23 May 2013 by Drugs.com

-- Baby's sensitive skin can break out in a heat rash when exposed to hot, humid weather, as the sweat gland openings become blocked. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests how to soothe heat rash: Put baby in comfortable clothing that allows the skin to stay cool and dry. Take extra care of folds of skin that may be moistened by urine, drool or sweat. Cleanse baby with cool water to wipe away sweat and body oils. Then thoroughly dry the skin. Never apply skin ointments. Read more

Seeing Others Scratch Can Trigger Your Own Itch

Posted 28 Mar 2011 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, March 28 – Seeing other people scratching can cause your brain to trigger your own itch, researchers suggest. The team at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center investigated the causes of what's known as "contagious itch." "It is conceivable that the neuronal networks or mechanisms underlying contagious itching may be similar to the ones involved in contagious yawning, a phenomenon that is still intensely studied, but not exactly clear," dermatologist Dr. Gil Yosipovitch said in a medical center news release. "The brain has such a powerful contribution to itch, and by understanding it, we may be able to develop future therapies that can target these areas and relieve the itch impulse," he added. Yosipovitsh and colleague Dr. Alexandru Papoiu monitored 14 healthy volunteers who had histamine or a placebo applied to their forearm, and 11 people with atopic dermatitis (a type of ... Read more
