Post-Op Nausea May Be Hereditary
Posted 1 Jul 2011 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, July 1 – Nausea and vomiting after waking from general anesthesia may be hereditary, a new study says. DNA samples from 122 patients with severe postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) were analyzed by Penn State College of Medicine researchers. They initially identified 41 genetic targets (single nucleotide polymorphisms – SNPs) that might be related to PONV. Further analysis led them to at least one SNP that was common to all the patients, according to the study in the July issue of the journal Anesthesiology. "We hope identification of the SNP will help better predict which patients are more susceptible to PONV and enable anesthesiologists to take appropriate precautions before those patients receive anesthesia," lead author Dr. Piotr K. Janicki said in a news release from the American Society of Anesthesiologists. This is the first study to analyze the genetics of ... Read more

FDA Approves Strativa Pharmaceuticals' Zuplenz (ondansetron) Oral Soluble Film
Posted 7 Jul 2010 by Drugs.com
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., July 2 /PRNewswire/ – Strativa Pharmaceuticals today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Zuplenz (ondansetron) oral soluble film for the prevention of postoperative, highly and moderately emetogenic cancer chemotherapy-induced, and radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Zuplenz, a unique formulation of ondansetron, is the first oral soluble film approved by the FDA as a prescription medication. The FDA approval was granted based on clinical study data comparing the bioequivalence of Zuplenz 8 mg to Zofran ODT (orally dissolving tablet) 8 mg. The pharmacokinetic results of these studies demonstrated that a single dose of Zuplenz, taken with or without water and under fed and fasting conditions, was comparable to Zofran ODT. "The FDA approval of Zuplenz marks an important milestone for Strativa as it reinforces our commitment ... Read more

Easy Way to Prevent Post-Op Nausea?
Posted 2 Dec 2009 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Oct. 19 – New research suggests that patients need not fear post-operative nausea and vomiting as much if they take dextrose, a form of glucose. "As one of the most common post-operative complications, [vomiting and nausea] remains one of the main causes of decreased patient satisfaction following surgery," said Dr. Susan Dabu-Bondoc of Yale School of Medicine, one of the authors of a new study, in a statement. "Along with discomfort, the adverse effects can be extensive and may include aspiration, wound suture opening, prolonged hospital stays, unanticipated admission after outpatient surgery and delayed return of a patient's ability to function in daily activities." The researchers, who were to release their findings Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in New Orleans, report that they assigned half of 56 surgery patients to receive ...
