Science Shows How Massage Eases Sore Muscles

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 1 – Having a massage after strenuous exercise not only feels good, it reduces inflammation in muscles at the cellular level, researchers have found. Massage also appears to promote the growth of new mitochondria in skeletal muscle. Mitochondria are cells' energy-producing "powerhouses," explained the researchers at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. For the study, the investigators conducted genetic analyses of muscle biopsies from the quadriceps of 11 men after they exercised to exhaustion on stationary bicycles. After the workout, one of each participant's legs was massaged. Biopsies from both legs were taken before exercise, immediately after 10 minutes of massage, and 2.5 hours after the end of the workout. Pain Patches Making Gains in U.S.

FRIDAY, Jan. 21 – Americans suffering from muscle pain are used to taking a pill or rubbing in a cream to help soothe their aches. But a new form of pain relief seems to be catching on: analgesics delivered through a medicated patch placed directly where it hurts. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the country's first over-the-counter, pain-relieving transdermal patches in 2008. But the patches, marketed under the brand name Salonpas, are nothing new. They've been sold in various countries in Asia since the 1930s, according to their manufacturer, the Japanese firm Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical. Best Option for Rotator Cuff Tear May Vary by Patient

WEDNESDAY, July 7 – Injuries to the shoulder's rotator cuff are treatable, but it's not clear whether surgery or non-surgical treatments – such as rest, exercise and medications – are the best approach, researchers say. Rotator cuff tears are common among older adults and can result in significant pain and limited arm motion, the authors of a new study noted in a news release from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). For this study, the researchers examined treatment and rehabilitative options for rotator cuff tears and found that both surgical and non-surgical treatments benefited patients, but there were few differences in outcome between these methods. In addition, the researchers found no evidence indicating ideal timing of surgery to repair tears to the rotator cuff, which is composed of four muscle-tendon units. WEDNESDAY, April 28 – The human body produces a substance similar to capsaicin – which makes chili peppers hot – at sites of pain, and blocking production of this substance can ease pain, a new study shows. The findings may lead to the development of non-addictive painkillers, according to the researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. In work with mice, the scientists found that a family of fatty acids called oxidized linoleic acid metabolites (OLAMs) play an important role in the biology of pain. "This is a major breakthrough in understanding the mechanisms of pain and how to more effectively treat it," senior investigator Kenneth Hargreaves, chair of the Department of Endodontics in the Dental School at the UT Health Sciences Center, said in an UT news release. The products were recalled because of consumer reports of first, second and third degree burns as well as skin irritation.
