Stress the 'Human' in HPV, One Man Suggests
Posted 23 Sep 2011 by Drugs.com
FRIDAY, Sept. 23 – Fred Wyand has been in a prime spot to watch the evolution of the public health response to human papillomavirus, or HPV. Since 2003, Wyand has served as editor of HPV News, a bimonthly newsletter published by the American Social Health Association. The newsletter has been around since the 1990s. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that most people associate with genital warts, a temporary but somewhat repugnant condition. But the more dangerous potential side effects of HPV infection are not as well known, Wyand said. "It's probably just within the last 30 or 40 years that science has begun to understand the connection between high-risk HPV types and cancers of the cervix, penis and anus," he said. "That's not even talking about the genital warts that aren't cancer-causing. So there's a lot of things to talk about." An HPV vaccine has been on the market and ... Read more

CDC Considers Vaccinating Boys, Not Just Girls, for HPV
Posted 23 Sep 2011 by Drugs.com
FRIDAY, Sept. 23 – U.S. health authorities now recommend that girls and young women be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that is a known cause of cervical cancer, but that recommendation does not extend to boys and young men. At least for now. A debate that's been simmering over whether males also should be vaccinated for human papillomavirus, or HPV, could come to a head in October at a meeting of a key advisory committee of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner. HPV is widespread among men. An international study published in March in The Lancet found that half of all adult males in the United States may be infected with the virus. More than 40 strains of HPV exist, and all are passed along by skin-to-skin contact, usually during sexual relations, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and ... Read more

Vaccinations Aren't Just for Kids
Posted 16 Sep 2011 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Sept. 16 – Public health experts often focus immunization awareness efforts toward protecting children, and with good reason: Facing a potentially bewildering schedule of vaccinations for their young ones, parents usually need all the help they can get. But vaccinations aren't just kid stuff. Medical science is creating an increasing number of immunizations targeted at adults, to help them avoid life-threatening diseases in middle-age and opportunistic infections when they're older. "Immunization is a life-long issue that we need to pay a lot of attention to," said Dr. Georges C. Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association. Some adult vaccinations are very well-known, like the annual shot that aims to prevent the spread of influenza. "You need an influenza shot every year," Benjamin said. "Part of that is because the virus changes every year, ... Read more

Older Women Can Benefit From Sex Ed Campaigns
Posted 14 Sep 2011 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 14 – Most campaigns designed to educate people about their sexual health target younger generations, excluding a large number of sexually active women over the age of 50 who need and want this information, a new study suggests. Researchers from the University of Florida revealed that although older women are aware of the risks for sexually transmitted diseases, they are not comfortable asking their doctor questions about their sexual health. The study, published in a special issue of the Journal of Consumer Affairs, concluded the communication between women over the age of 50 and their physicians needs improvement. Study author Cynthia Morton and her colleagues pointed out that many health professionals mistakenly think older women already have all the information they need. On the contrary, the study revealed older women need information on how to discuss safe sex ... Read more

FDA Approves Zyclara (imiquimod) Cream, 3.75% for the Treatment of External Genital Warts
Posted 27 Mar 2011 by Drugs.com
BRISTOL, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar 25, 2011 - Graceway Pharmaceuticals announced today that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Zyclara Cream for the treatment of external genital and perianal warts (EGW) in patients 12 years of age and older. Zyclara Cream's clinical studies demonstrated that using its once-daily treatment regimen, for up to eight weeks, safely and effectively clears genital warts. In addition, data showed that of those patients who achieved complete clearance, only a small number experienced a recurrence of their wart(s) 12 weeks after treatment. Most approved topical prescription treatments currently available to treat EGW are associated with lengthy treatment regimens, which may impact patient compliance. Zyclara Cream was developed to meet the need for a shorter treatment regimen, while maintaining the efficacy (both initial and sustained ... Read more

New STD Report Finds Some Progress, High Costs for U.S.
Posted 23 Nov 2010 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, Nov. 22 – The approximately 19 million new sexually transmitted disease (STD) infections that occur each year in the United States cost the health care system about $16.4 billion annually, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its annual STD report released Monday. The data for 2009 shows a continued high burden of STDs but there are some signs of progress, according to the report, which focuses on chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. The national rate of reported gonorrhea cases stands at 99 cases per 100,000 people, its lowest level since record keeping started in 1941, and cases are declining among all racial/ethnic groups (down 17 percent since 2006). Since 2006, chlamydia infections have increased 19 percent to about 409 per 100,000 people. However, the report suggests that this indicates more people than ever are being screened for chlamydia, which is ... Read more

New Study Finds HPV Vaccine Protects Against Genital Warts
Posted 21 Jul 2010 by Drugs.com

TUESDAY, July 20 – A new study finds that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine protects not only against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, but also helps prevent genital warts and low-grade cervical growths. The findings are published in the July 21 online edition of BMJ. Health officials in the United States have been urging vaccination of young women and girls. The researchers estimate that the virus causes an estimated 500,000 cases of cervical cancer in women each year around the world. The virus can also cause warts in the genital area and low-grade cervical growths. Those two conditions are thought to strike 30 million people annually. In the just-released randomized control trial, researchers studied 17,622 women in 24 countries and territories who had been assigned to take the vaccine or a placebo over a six-month period. The women were aged 16 to ... Read more
