Common Respiratory Diseases Tied to Lung Cancer Risk

FRIDAY, Aug. 15, 2014 – Three common respiratory diseases seem to be associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, researchers report. The investigators analyzed data from seven studies that included more than 25,000 people and found that chronic bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia were linked with a greater risk of developing lung cancer. Having asthma or tuberculosis was not associated with a higher lung cancer risk, according to the study published in the Aug. 15 issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. People who had all three – chronic bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia – had a higher risk of lung cancer than those with chronic bronchitis only. There was no increased risk of lung cancer among those who had chronic bronchitis along with asthma or tuberculosis, the study found. Too Many Antibiotics Still Prescribed for Sore Throats, Bronchitis: Studies

THURSDAY, Oct. 3 – Despite efforts to curb the unnecessary use of antibiotics, many doctors still prescribe them for illnesses that don't respond to the medications, Harvard researchers report. Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections, and yet they are prescribed at a rate of 60 percent for sore throats and 73 percent for bronchitis, conditions that are typically caused by viruses, the scientists said. "For sore throat, antibiotics should be prescribed about 10 percent of the time," said study author Dr. Jeffrey Linder, a researcher in the division of general medicine and primary care at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Although the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages the proper use of antibiotics, their use for sore throats has only dropped from about 70 percent of doctor visits in 1990 to 60 percent of visits now, he said. Patient Education Helps Prevent Overuse of Antibiotics for Cough, Study Finds

FRIDAY, Jan. 18 – Patient education in the form of brochures and posters helps reduce the overuse of antibiotics to treat bronchitis in teens and adults, according to a new study. The overuse of antibiotics to treat bronchitis could worsen trends in antibiotic resistance, the researchers noted. They said computer prompts alerting nurses to the need for patient education on the difference between bronchitis and pneumonia also are effective in reducing reliance on antibiotics. The study, led by Dr. Ralph Gonzales of the University of California, San Francisco, involved 33 primary care practices that are part of an integrated health care system in central Pennsylvania. At 11 practices, printed materials – including educational brochures and posters explaining the difference between bronchitis and pneumonia – were routinely offered to patients suffering from a cough. Most Coughs Don't Respond to Antibiotics, Study Confirms

TUESDAY, Dec. 18 – Commonly prescribed antibiotics don't help cure most coughs in adults, new research confirms. Patients with a cough or bronchitis are often prescribed antibiotics, and previous studies have had conflicting results about their effectiveness. For this study, researchers randomly assigned more than 2,000 adults complaining of a cough to take either the antibiotic amoxicillin for a week or an inactive placebo. Overall, the antibiotic was no more effective at relieving symptoms or their duration than the placebo, the study found. The findings also held among people who were older than 60. "The main message here is that antibiotics are usually not necessary for respiratory infections, if pneumonia is not suspected," said Dr. Philipp Schuetz of the Kantonsspital Aarau in Switzerland. -- Bronchitis is a viral or bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the bronchial tubes, making breathing more difficult. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute recommends these steps to help cope with bronchitis: Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Adults may want to take aspirin for fever; acetaminophen (never aspirin) for children. If your doctor suspects you have a bacterial infection, he or she may prescribe an antibiotic. An antibiotic will not help a viral infection, the most common cause of bronchitis. Run a humidifier or sit in a steamy bathroom to help open the airways. If your doctor approves, take a medication to control cough and inflammation. Avoid exposure to things that irritate your lungs, especially tobacco smoke. Read more

More Americans Have at Least 2 Chronic Health Issues: CDC

TUESDAY, July 31 – The number of Americans aged 45 and older with two or more chronic conditions has grown over the past decade, new research estimates, with seniors especially vulnerable to a rising risk of both diabetes and high blood pressure. Between 1999-2000 and 2009-2010, the percentage of Americans in the 45- to 64-year age group with two or more of the conditions grew from 16 percent to 21 percent, according to survey results. For adults 65 and older, the percentage increased from 37 percent to 45 percent. The survey was compiled by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These diseases, which cause inflammation of the lungs that make it difficult for a person to breathe, are commonly included under the umbrella term "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease" (COPD). Lung infections, air pollution or tobacco smoke are common triggers for flare-ups of the diseases and can lead to hospitalization among patients. Cigarette Smoke Fuels Mucus Production in People With Bronchitis

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 23 – Smoking increases the production of mucus associated with chronic bronchitis, a new study shows. U.S. researchers conducted tests on human airway tissue and on laboratory mice, and found that cigarette smoke suppresses a protein that causes the natural death of mucus-producing cells in the airways of bronchitis patients. "Although it is known that chronic mucus secretion is a hallmark of chronic bronchitis, the mechanisms underlying this condition are largely unknown.
