Cured Meat Products Linked to Lung Disease Flare-Ups
Posted 8 Mar 2012 by Drugs.com

THURSDAY, March 8 – Eating too much lunch meat, bacon, hot dogs and such could worsen symptoms of airway diseases like emphysema and chronic bronchitis, a new study suggests. These diseases, which cause inflammation of the lungs that make it difficult for a person to breathe, are commonly included under the umbrella term "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease" (COPD). Lung infections, air pollution or tobacco smoke are common triggers for flare-ups of the diseases and can lead to hospitalization among patients. In the new study, researchers in Spain reported that the nitrates used as preservatives in cured meats produce reactive nitrogen species that could damage lung tissue, and excessive consumption of these food items might raise the risk of hospitalization among COPD patients. During the investigation, 274 COPD patients were monitored for an average of two years starting with their ... Read more

FDA Approves Arcapta Neohaler to treat Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Posted 1 Jul 2011 by Drugs.com
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved Arcapta Neohaler (indacaterol inhalation powder) for the long term, once-daily maintenance bronchodilator treatment of airflow obstruction in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema. COPD is a serious lung disease that makes breathing difficult. Symptoms can include breathlessness, chronic cough and excessive phlegm. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD, and is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Arcapta Neohaler is a new molecular entity in the beta2-adrenergic agonist class that helps muscles around the airways of the lungs stay relaxed to prevent symptoms of COPD, such as wheezing and breathlessness. Arcapta Neohaler is not intended to treat asthma or sudden, severe symptoms of ... Read more

Cigarette Smoke Fuels Mucus Production in People With Bronchitis
Posted 23 Feb 2011 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 23 – Smoking increases the production of mucus associated with chronic bronchitis, a new study shows. U.S. researchers conducted tests on human airway tissue and on laboratory mice, and found that cigarette smoke suppresses a protein that causes the natural death of mucus-producing cells in the airways of bronchitis patients. The study appears online ahead of print in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. "Although it is known that chronic mucus secretion is a hallmark of chronic bronchitis, the mechanisms underlying this condition are largely unknown. This study shows that the airway cells that secrete mucus are sustained by cigarette smoke, which suppresses a cell death-inducing protein called Bik," study author Yohannes Tesfaigzi, director of the COPD Program at Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in Albuquerque, N.M., said in a journal ...
