Cancer Doctors Still Not Great With Patients' Pain

Posted 17 Nov 2011 by

THURSDAY, Nov. 17 – Oncologists think they are good at managing cancer patients' pain, but a new survey shows otherwise. In response to two hypothetical vignettes describing a cancer patient who was suffering from pain, the majority of oncologists offered up a treatment plan that pain specialists would consider "unacceptable." "There are serious deficiencies in oncologists' knowledge of cancer pain management," said study author Brenda Breuer, director of epidemiologic research in the department of pain medicine and palliative care at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. The study appears in the Nov. 14 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Depending on the type of cancer and how advanced it is, anywhere from 14 percent to 100 percent of cancer patients experience pain, according to background information in the study. In recent years, there's been a growing understanding ... Read more

Study Finds Third of Cancer Patients on Opioids Are Confused

Posted 3 Mar 2011 by

THURSDAY, March 3 – About a third of cancer patients taking opioid painkillers experience cognitive problems such as confusion, disorientation and forgetfulness, a new study finds. Research analyzing 1,915 cancer patients from 17 health-care centers around Europe indicated that 32.9 percent on high-strength opioid drugs such as morphine scored lower on observer-rated mental tests measuring orientation to time and place, attention and word recall, among other skills. Patients with lung cancer were nearly 50 percent more likely to experience cognitive problems, which researchers attributed to the symptom load involved in their diagnosis. But study author Geana P. Kurita cautioned that the association between opioid use and poor mental function does not prove that painkillers cause the problem. "The design allows us to analyze the potential factors that can interfere with cognitive ... Read more

Scientists Discover Substance That Causes Pain

Posted 28 Apr 2010 by

WEDNESDAY, April 28 – The human body produces a substance similar to capsaicin – which makes chili peppers hot – at sites of pain, and blocking production of this substance can ease pain, a new study shows. The findings may lead to the development of non-addictive painkillers, according to the researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. In work with mice, the scientists found that a family of fatty acids called oxidized linoleic acid metabolites (OLAMs) play an important role in the biology of pain. "This is a major breakthrough in understanding the mechanisms of pain and how to more effectively treat it," senior investigator Kenneth Hargreaves, chair of the Department of Endodontics in the Dental School at the UT Health Sciences Center, said in an UT news release. "These data demonstrate, for the first time, that OLAMs constitute a new family of ... Read more

Three-Fourths of Cancer Patients Have Severe Flares of Pain

Posted 29 Jan 2010 by

FRIDAY, Jan. 29 – Breakthrough cancer pain is a major challenge for 75 percent of adult cancer patients, according to new survey findings released by the American Pain Foundation. Breakthrough cancer pain refers to sudden, temporary flares of severe pain that occur even when a patient is taking pain medication. "We're not talking about minor aches and pain. These severe flares of pain often strike without warning, leaving many people fearful of the next crippling episode and unduly burdening patients and their families," Will Rowe, chief executive officer of the American Pain Foundation, said in a news release from the foundation. "Effective pain management is critical to restoring the quality of life these individuals so rightfully deserve," he added. The survey included 545 adults aged 18 and older who've been diagnosed with cancer, are currently living with cancer-related pain, are ... Read more
