Many U.S. Women Live Far From Gynecologic Cancer Care

Posted 15 Jun 2015 by Drugs.com

MONDAY, June 15, 2015 – Millions of American women have poor access to gynecologic cancer care, a new study finds. The analysis showed that 36 percent of counties in the United States are more than 50 miles from the nearest doctor specializing in ovarian, uterine and cervical cancer. About 10 percent of American women – nearly 15 million – live in those counties, researchers found. "This is the first national study to identify specific regions of the United States where residents may be at an increased risk for poor clinical outcomes – including misdiagnoses and late detection – as a result of limited access to specialized gynecologic cancer care," said study author Dr. David Shalowitz, a fellow in the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine's division of gynecologic oncology, in Philadelphia. "Based on our estimates, it's likely that more than 7,000 women with gynecologic ... Read more

Mediterranean Diet Tied to Lower Odds of Uterine Cancer

Posted 27 May 2015 by Drugs.com

WEDNESDAY, May 27, 2015 – Adhering to a Mediterranean diet may significantly reduce a woman's risk of uterine cancer, a new study suggests. "Our research shows the impact a healthy, balanced diet could have on a woman's risk of developing womb [uterine] cancer. This adds more weight to our understanding of how our everyday choices, like what we eat and how active we are, affect our risk of cancer," study author Cristina Bosetti, of the IRCCS-Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche in Milan, Italy, said in a Cancer Research UK news release. Bosetti's team analyzed the diets of more than 5,000 Italian women to determine how well they followed the Mediterranean diet. In general, the diet emphasizes eating vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals, potatoes, fish and monounsaturated fats, along with moderate alcohol intake, and cutting back on meat and dairy products. Women who followed seven of the ... Read more

Simple Test Might Predict Whether Some Pregnancies Succeed

Posted 28 Sep 2012 by Drugs.com

FRIDAY, Sept. 28 – Measuring progesterone levels in women with pain or bleeding during early pregnancy may help determine whether or not the pregnancy is viable, a new study says. A viable pregnancy means that there is a reasonable expectation that it will result in a live birth. Progesterone is a hormone that plays a key role in pregnancy. About one-third of women experience vaginal bleeding or pain in early pregnancy. Ultrasound is used to determine pregnancy viability but this test can sometimes be inconclusive, the authors of the new study pointed out. Along with Dutch colleagues, researchers at the University of Birmingham in England analyzed the findings of 26 studies involving more than 9,400 pregnant women. Seven of the studies included women with pain or bleeding and an inconclusive ultrasound result, and 19 studies included women with pain or bleeding and no ultrasound. The ... Read more
