I’ve been prescribed these for anxiety and panic attacks. I suffer with multiple everyday. The issue is that I’m already on medication to battle dizziness that I can’t handle. My doctor said that if I experience dizziness as a side effect of the propranolol it won’t be counter balanced by the other meds (basically I’ll still feel dizzy even with the other meds preventing dizziness). But I’ve had 3 panic attacks so far just over worrying about how severe the side effects might be and for how long they will last at a time. Can anybody give any insight to ease my mind please? How strong do the side effects actually affect you and for how long each period?

So we are all different. But for me personally, I take 10mgs twice a day and at that dose I’ve never had ANY problems. I started initially at a higher dose of 20mg twice a day and on that dose I had some side effects, but for an anxiety sufferer, fatigue and being tired were not actually that bad as far as side effects go. I’m a big believer of propranolol. It’s been around since the 1960’s and has been studied quite thoroughly. The only reason it’s no longer a first line treatment for blood pressure is because better drugs have come along for hypertension. This drug is an absolute godsend for my anxiety. I do not say that lightly. My doctor will absolutely no longer write scripts for Xanax, and in my opinion, for me, propranolol works equal than or better than Xanax. I hope this helps. Good luck to you!
Do you mind me asking if the side effects you experienced were the reason you went into a lower dosage?
I’m a very active person and at the higher dose, I was too fatigued/tired. But that’s a very manageable side effect for an anxiety sufferer. It’s a beta blocker so it slows your cardiovascular system down, which is exactly what I need. My mind is calm, but my body was usually “too tense”. I felt “wound up” all the time. But this propranolol just knocks that tension out. For me, it’s like Xanax without the post Xanax rebound anxiety. Many people say it’s hard to get off of, but my doctor assured me if I ever decide to quit, we will use a slow taper. I like it because it’s accessible, extremely affordable, and it works well for me. I hope this helps! Remember although everyone is different, this drug has been vigorously tested for over fifty years. I tried many different anti depressants and had bad experiences. Those side effects were horrendous. I’m so glad my doctor turned me on to propranolol!
