It sounds real easy to just ask the dentist to prescribe some pain meds until antibiotic kicks in, but unfortunately, they will no longer prescribe any pain meds to people that have had pain meds in past or have a history that they can now pull up on computer of all pain meds you ever taken. It's called patient profiling. And I want to run my face into a brick wall I'm in so much pain and been on antibiotics for 3 days now, that I been doubling up on with motrin 800mg taking every 3 hrs when should be every 6, with still no relief at all, and he told me that my tooth infection has spread to my jaw already, yet will not prescribe anything else. I am praying I dont get sepsis and die bc what he ordered me definately isnt helping.
I understand the pain completely I have 3 teeth in the back of my mouth that are exposed nerv and cavitied. Pain is outrageous and not forgiving. Penicillin is really good for the bacterial infection in the mouth. The ibuprofen does some justice for the pain but not enough if you are at a 10 on the 1-10 scale. Ask your doctor to prescribe you a few hydrocones and take a half of pill twice and day and pain will ease up enough to make it until you can have the tooth pulled or oral surgery.
Oh my gosh! I am going thru the same stuff here! My dentist said it could be gum/ear infection causing some swelling. Prescribed me penicillin and only 30 hrs into it without any type of relief. Using water, ice cold, on the side that hurts and just let a swallow sit there and either drink it or spit it out. I went to another dentist and he did a nitrogen test, identified the molar to be needing pulled or a root canal. Always get another answer as I'll have the wait til after Easter now to get back to my dentist and explain. My pain is one the 12-13 scale if a 1-10!! Is there anything anyone can recommend for some relief until then? Please and thank you!!!
Omg I'm going through the same thing!!! I'm taking penicillin also..
I can't eat!!! I've lost weight, are you able to eat? I'm taking ibruprophen for pain..it works for awhile!! I have dental surgery in a few weeks to remove this tooth
I have deen taking this medicine for adout 5 days know and im still in pain and its makinh my head hurt to
Until the pen kicks in then get childrens liquid tylenol or advil or motrin and put it directly n the pain it will numb it don't use orajel or ambels it'll mahe it feel woorse. Jaime
It may take up to a few days for the infection and inflammation to subside. If I were you and in so much pain, I would call and tell my dentist how much pain I was in and ask if they can send in an Rx for a few days of pain medication to get you by until the antibiotics kick in. Penicillin wont do much for the pain until it starts killing off the infection which may take a few days. In the meantime, acetaminophen or ibuprofen may help if you are able to take those medications. It also may help to put an ice pack on the jaw area over the involved teeth to help reduce some of the inflammation. Often it is the iflammation and swelling causing the pain.
It does help some to swish very warm salt water in your mouth, swish for 30 seconds. Repeat frequently.
