I have been on omeprazole for 6 weeks and it did not help much. Now on Prevacid for 3 weeks, and it's better. No pain anymore, but still sour taste in the mouth. Not much during the day but closer to morning every day. Anybody had experience with this? Thanks.
How long until sour taste goes away with GERD?

Tolya; yes you did the right thing most people that end up with the sour mouth etc it is not the right medication for them and the doctor well need to change it but if it does show up give it at least 2 weeks and see how the sour stomach or mouth feels. At least the pain is gone. That is a big one. Good luck chuck1957
Thank you Chuck. It's very helpful.
Hello Tolya
I too have suffered from a sour taste in my mouth especially if I take my omeprazole on an empty stomach. Even worse if you take your omeprazole and for breakfast just grab a cup of coffee.
For best results I take my 40mg omeprazole first thing in the morning then wait approx 20 to 30 minutes before sitting down to breakfast.
Also, I have noticed the slower I eat in the morning the better chance my GERD isn't as severe.
Lastly, despite enjoying coffee at all hours of the day it's definitely one beverage for me to limit. I believe it's the acidic acid in the coffee that gives me the sour stomach/heartburn.
As for how long does it take before the sour stomach goes away I would say everybody different but for the most part you should notice some relief within 10 to 12 days.
Finally, if you continue to suffer longer than 2 weeks I would call your doctor to make an appointment to see if any diagnostic test are necessary.
Feel better

Thank you Bestpup,
I am off coffee completely. And alcohol. And tomatoes, oranges, spices... and I am at week 12. Have had tests done...
Tolya; PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THE MEDICATION BEFORE TALKING WITH THE DOCTOR NOT KNOWING WHAT ELSE YOU MIGHT BE TAKING YOU SHOULD BE TALKING TO THE DOCTOR IF THE SOUR TASTE DOES NOT GO AWAY SHORTLY YOU DO NOT NEED MORE PROBLEMS THAN YOU HAVE ALREADY. HAVE A GOOD DAY. cHUCK1957
