Gabapentin/Neurontin - Are any of you, taking Gab, experiencing little or lNO pain control?

I'm currently on a relatively high dose (perhaps one of our nurses could let me know if my dose is actually high?) of Gabapentin, 600mgs 4 x's a day and I am having very little relief, my pain has been very high since the beginning of January. (also, anyone craving sugar like mad on this med?) I also take an opioid pain med as well, and I do believe I've built up a tolerance so I'm going to put myself thru withdrawal to make them work again. That kind of sucks, as w/d is pretty hellish. I've done it before... about six months ago and my opioid meds began to work again.
But the Gabapentin isn't doing anything either, do we build a tolerance to it as well as opioids? Is that possible? If so, should I taper off of Gabapentin and see if it works? Any advise/opinions/and laughter will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance, Lara
I have been on GABAPENTIN before yrs ago and found no difference at all. Are u on all of these meds for just depression or do u have pain with your other problems? i have been on a lot of meds through for my clinical depression.. have finally found a dr that has given me the right coctail.now i have problems with my sciatic nearve and RA in my back. ra dr put me on tramadol and naproxon, works wonderful.i would like to be your friend and have a great discussion about our problems. i have no one to talk to.
hope u have a painless day! light and love, sandra--- mully

Hi mully123, or Sandra, I have chronic pain, not depression. Although, I do get a bit down about this pain! You have a friend now. You will have lots of friends if you stay on this site, as well. It's a wonderful site with great, caring people. You are NOT alone! You now have hundreds, thousands of people to talk to about the way you feel, and believe me, you will make many friends on this site and never feel alone! I'm happy to be your friend! I'm glad that your doc has put you on something that works, that is fantastic. Sorry to hear that you've RA and sciatica, both very painful, I'm certain. I do hope your doc's can get that pain under control for you. I remain in chronic pain from fibromyalgia and neuropathy, which is a stinging type of pain, it really is bad, truth be told, but my sense of humor keeps me going and laughing. Thank you for your answer to my query! Lara

I refuse to take any medication related to anything that has to do with bipolar disorder or depression. I have worked physical labor for over a decade. My physician prescribed me neurontin. Same family as lyrica. I did some research and I feel extremely uneasy. I know how those types of medications can affect you. ( in the long term... ).. I have a pinched nerve in my left leg. I can't hardly sleep, and I stay in constant pain. I've tried tramadol and have had no relief. Please. I am open to suggestions.

I've been on more. It was for RSD. It didn't relieve that much pain at first, then about 6 weeks in it hit. It became more effective the more I used it. I know that you're in agony, but try it for 3 more weeks. With me it started reducing the pain a little, blunting the pain a little and then it began killing the pain. Sort of like a ball rolling down a hill, the more it went the faster it went.

Thank you, to our sweet Meyati! I will keep taking it IF you think it will actually do something. I've been on and off of it a couple of times, actually, but I'll give it the collge try this time, dear Lady.
Meyati, you truly amaze me. You have had so much happening to you medically in the last year! But here you are, helping others. What a kind woman you are!! Thank you so much, Lara

It killed the pain enough-from permanent nerve damage, that I slowly backed down and was left pain free. If i get bumped or suffer trauma to the area, pain comes rushing back. I can't even use a cane, as the vibrations set off the nerve pain. I really tried when I sprained my ankle. The nerve pain was worse than the ankle. You have different causes. Many doctors don't prescribe enough to be effective-low dosage. Then it takes weeks to kick in, but it's worth it to try. We want and expect immediate relief, but it doesn't always work that way- like a broken arm doesn't heal in a day, even though the doctor is doing all of the right things.

You are so right, we all (most of us?) want immediate relief, at least I do. I will go slowly this time and stay on it, IF I don't blow up to a giant size, as I'm not comfortable being overweight nor does being overweight help with MY pain, in my opinion. I am NOT judging anyone that is overweight, as I've been there after my child was born. So, please take no offense, everyone? I don't aim to hurt anyones feelings. I love ALL people, no matter what size, colour, or creed! Love, Lara

At the Laguna and Acoma Pueblos, they say to a heavy woman, especially after child birth--You look so happy-the gods have blessed you with enough food, a healthy child, I'm so happy for you. You go to a tribal gym and they're working out anyway. Also jogging or walking for miles, even when it's 120 degrees. Then at the university, we say that every degree adds 2-4 inches to your rear and mid-section.
