On July 1st this year purdue pharmcy has released a new Buprenorphine Transdermal system patch,my pain specialist was thinking about prescribing it to me instead of oxys for pain,a person is supposed to keep the patch on for 7 days and then change it.i told her that id rather stick to the oxys, she told me most pain specialists are going to be switching there patients from painkiller pills to this patch,i have taken oxys once in the last 9 days, the major part of my withdrawl is gone so im debating whether to just try the patch.anywz have any of u guys heard about this new patch?

I have been taking the 10mcg/hour patch for 7 days now. I've also been given an enhancer to go with it to. Also I was recomended a specialty cream all designed just for me. As for the patch, I don't feel that it's working effectly enough even with the pain pills he gave with it. I'm still having a lot of, a lot of discomfort! Hopefully he's experiencing just to see how much I actually need to ease my pain. I have arthritus, nearly everywhere. Both hands; both ankles, both knees, & lower back, elbows & shoulders. As for the bio-med cream, I felt absolutly nothing. ( sorry bio med)
Your comment regarding almost through with withdrawal is irrelevant re. taking Butrans.
Butrans is a weekly patch pain killer for chronic pain. If you suffer from chronic pain then Butrans is a great supplement to Norco or Oxycodone. It works for a lot of people although expect it to last 3-4 days not 7, as it's marketed. It's best to wiki Butrans and read its half life. (half strength) of 3 days.
My physical medicine doctor just wrote me a prescription for this yesterday as I was diagnosed with disseminated idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. She started me at 10mcg along with my usual script of six 325mg oxycodone a day. This is a pain I've lived with for the past four years and being that I am only 25, I am excited to try something that offers a more permanent solution for my pain and hopefully will alleviate the need for most - if not all - of the pills I've been stuck taking. Reading your responses here, I am confident in starting this regiment. I'll be sure to post again in a few weeks with results!
hi i started on Butrans patch 5 about 3 weeks ago,wow i can only say iv stopped all pain medications i was on,im only on the 5 micrograms, and can only say i wish id taken it sooner,it has really worked and stopped all the pain, just an odd niggle now and then, its brilliant, and has now given me my life back, can do things i could never do before.i was a bit woozy for the first 4 days ,but hey bingo.would definately give it a try at least, because you will never know, and you can always switch to your old medication,if it doesnt agree with you,id say it is a brilliant treatment.try it.
In 2010, i had an L4-L5 fusion done. After the surgery, I had continued severe pain. They put me in an MRI machine, and discovered that i have very bad back arthritis. I am currently on the 20mg/hr Butrans patch, and it has made a world of difference. I'm no longer hitting my pain pills on a regular basis ( I keep a very small stash handy for breakthrough pains ), however i would recommend this patch to anyone who is in chronic pain.Tthe downside to the patch is that it generally wears off after about 5 days, but it is alot better than popping pills just to function.
I have been reading a lot on this site about the Butrans patch... and I am thinking most of the info on here is from new users, like me (6 weeks). I would love to hear from some people who have been using them long term,
I have been using them for a year. Would not trade for anything. But.. get an adhesive patch to cover it, like Tagaderm (pharmacy can order or get on Amazon) - makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE as it waterproofs and protects the patch to secure its sustainability.
Have been on it for three years. It works very well for my Fibromyalgia Pain.
No side effects at all. I love it.
I just started on the patch 2 weeks ago. I'm on the 5mcg patch with Lortab 7.5x2 for breakthrough pain. Trying to give these patches a chance, but my pain is still constant with little relief. I'm hoping that my Dr will up the dosage my next visit and that will help. I have noticed that the small amount of relief I got did wear off after the 4th day. The pm Dr I go to doesn't believe in using narcotics for my type of pain ( severe arthritis along with bone spurs in my shoulders and hips). I'm slightly confused about this since the patches are a narcotic. I need more help than he's giving me, but don't want to come across like some kind of drug- seeking junkie. I just want enough relief that I can function on some kind of normal basis. Any suggestions on how to talk to him would be much appreciated.
I was put on the patch at 10 mcg. It worked great for 4 days. My doctor explained that it worked on pain receivers differently, so it was not going to give me the "addictive high" of regular pain meds and was not as addictive. It is supposed to be MUCH better for the body. He upped me to 20 mcg. I had a very hard time finding it, but my pharmacy was willing to order it for me. When I stopped using them, my body didn't go into withdrawal. I think it is great idea to get people off of OxyContin and I'm glad to hear it is helping!!!
How long were you on it? And did you take it to help you get off other pain meds?
I wish that ONLY people who are on the patch would reply. The first two comments are wrong and misleading. Butrans is NOT not like suboxone to get you off of opioids. It's a pain killer for "chronic medium to severe pain."
I've been on it for 5 days and it's the best pain relief in 8+ years. I've been on 4 Norco/day plus Celebrex and Zanaflex. Those pills are unnecessary thanks to Butrans 10mcg. My only complaint is that it's wearing off after 4-5 days, not 7 days as prescribed. Make sure your pain doctor continues at half dose your other pain meds. Save them for days 5-7, if needed. Good luck and yes it works great.
Update: Butrans stopped working completely. I first thought they were dud patches but it happens every month. I finally stopped taking them. For severe pain like mine they're a waste of money. I don't know how it went from total relief the first few patches then nothing :(
I have been using the 20mcg for three years and they do work well for pain!!! My only bit of advice is that you buy waterproof patches to seal them on. I discovered that they help keep the patch tightly secured so you get the medicinal benefit. If you feel like they aren't working try that!! It makes a huge difference!
What is a waterproof patch? I am having the same problem. It works for 5 days and then its like it stops all together.
Completely agree with adhesive solution.. patches that are exposed are more likely to stop working.
I have so many back issues that got worse after carrying my twin boys!! I have a question for you my doctor just prescribed the 10mg butran patch for my pain, I was on percocet for almost a year and grew a tolerance on about 70 mg a day which scared me so i wanted off of them, I have been off of them for 5 months, and nothing else has helped the pain that he has tried, they also made me groggy and tired but did help the pain.
How does the patch make you feel mentally, I like to get as much perspective as possible before I try anything because my boys are 16 months old and trial and error is really impossible for me Incase it makes you feel sick or way tired etc.

I have bulging disc in L5 S1 area and I'm in pain everyday. ..I've been on lorcet 10s, neurotin 600 and get injections in my back for the past 4 years. I have built a tolerance for the lorcet and was taking around 6-8 a day and was still in pain. This past Friday I was prescribed butran 20mcg and I have Only taken a total of 5 lorcet and 0 neurotin in 4 days. I'm not completely outta pain but 85% better. Theres Only a couple times my back has hurt and its when I had raised up the way I shouldn't have but this is so much better than constant pain which I was in. If anything at least give it a try because I'm telling u I feel a lot better and I honestly think I could run a few laps around a track right now and if you knew me you would know that I'm not doing anything that would cause compression or anything to my back because I was hurting so bad and that sucks coming from an athletic type person who played ball 5 nights a week. I'm just hoping it keeps working but anyways I say try it because its working for me when Nothing else has
Do not just stop medications due to your patch, they are used to work together. Also be careful of back epidural, injections, ect... near the spine. You may have Adhesive Arachnoiditis ( chronic pain syndrome CPS or CRPS, lumbar or cervical radionucluopathy, failed back surgery,
intractable pain, or whatever they decide to call it: it's Intractable pain.! Or Chronic Adhesive Arachnoiditis. Also with pain and opioid use there comes... (Cardiac-adrenal-pain- syndrome) I'm on 600 mg neurontin 2 in am and 3 in pm. Norco 10/325mg, butrans 5 mcg/7day patch but that needs to come off for summer and the heat, at least for me anyway. Also check into intractable pain. Opioid will also deplete adrenals so have hormones checked. Replace any depleted like pregnenolone estradiol, testosterone and cortisol is usually depleted by 3pm so a dexamethasone 0.75mg low dose 3-5 x a week, 7 to start to get rid of the neuroinflammation. You around like intractable pain and not chronic. Do you get cold hands and feet? (Raynauds) There's your first sign for Arachnoiditis.
Just started the patch two weeks ago. Already feel a signifigant amount of difference. My husband has been on pain meds for 17 years. He is now on 100 mg of oxymorphone. Rather have patch anyday.
i just got a script for it for back pain in a car accident and its been working really well so far, its been about 4 hours and i am not in pain. it is sedating but i am not to tolerable to this type of med. i have the 5mcg per hr 7 day patches for a month. says to not get any heat near the patch either or it can release way to much of the medicine and cause possible overdose.
I started out last month on the 10mcg butrans patch but it really didnt last seven days, the first 3=4 days were good, not great, but better than before patch. After the 4th day I went down hill. Returned to doctor and he up'd me to a higher dose. So now I am on the 20 mcg patch and for the first time in years I can say I am almost pain free, and my stiffness is almost gone, it is like I am living again, I actually feel great, I have suffered with fibromylgia pain for years, so stiff in am I had to crawl out of bed, and couldnt bend to tie my shoes, since the new dosage patch I feel so good, I just hope it lasts more than the first few days on. I will try and post later on and let u know. Just be careful if you use to wipe area with alcohol prior to putting on, week two patch fell right off, after ten minutes, had to tape on and felt like it was a dud patch. For three hundred dollars for four even one dud is upsetting. But if the way I feel now lasts I will pay the money to be able to function and smile it has been a long time coming.
My pain doctor raised me to 20 mcg. After 6 years of constant pain due to failed cervical fusion I feel better 5-6 hrs/day for 4 days, then the patch wears off quickly.
When it works it's the best medication that I've ever had. I take 1 Norco/ day for the first 3-4 days a week. Then it's 2 Norco on day 5 and my usual 3-4 Norco on days 6-7. The good news is that when it works it REALLY works, as long as I am sedentary and not stressed out. But if I do anything, even food shopping, the patch doesn't help much. Any suggestions?
I have degenerative disk disease,3 disk in neck area for almost 2 years, fighting surgery hard. I make mega scar tissue after any surgery, but know it is coming, fibro for as long as I can remember, I was one of the first when they had just decided it was a disease, what a fight that was just to convince a dr, that there really was pain all over. I am so glad for everyone that it is now really accepted. Also have arthur. of the spine hips and knees. Took darvocte for many years only to find that , "well you know that story". My rhumo doc passed away, he actually had it himself, god, what luck to find him back in those days. After,"the change", I can not take anything with morphine, tried oxys sent me to heart dr. my pain mgmt dr. is at his wits end, pretty sad because I have the pain and I pay the bills, another story. Pain is so bad now I take 30mg oxycodone per day plus the fentynal patch after 9 mths on that patch I start to swell.
He dropped me from a 50 mcg fentyl patch without the back down. one week of terrible withdrawl. I call in he then puts me on the butran 10 mcg patch, maybe a 15% help in pain. Call back in a few days tells me to put on 2 patches. Got at best 25% help with pain, not to mention the patch, from what I understand, is knocking off the pain receptors in brain any help I could be getting from oxy break thru pills. I actually slept for 4 days straight couldn't hardly get out of bed to make it to rest room, pain so bad. This has got to be the worst drug I have ever but on or in my body, not to mention the price. Dr. put me back on fent. patch at 25mcg working up to 50mcg, told asst. well you know don't understand why I can be dropped from 50mcg but not put back on 50mcg. My neurosurgeon suggested methodone good drug few side effects, talked with pain mgmt guy, he just will not try it. Time to find new pain management doc, but for that patch, it is a joke for serious pain. shelia
The heat issue is really to not lay in the sun with it exposed. One tip to everybody on Butrans, feel free to call Purdue with Butrans questions. You will get a pharmacist who is not a sales whore. I've gotten pretty good info. Much of it contradicts with my doctor and many of your doctors recommend.
Good luck. For some people, not me, it's a life saver. Then again we are all different with different medical problems and varying levels of pain tolerance.
hi bcboy try them im on them nearly ten months as was addicted 2 df118 codine for 21 years its worked 4me im 43 yrs old them patches saved my live hope that helped u a bit bye 4 now leoreid
The patch is really really new and I have not heard much about it other than from you and the fact that it was just released. It probably isn't designed to control pain, it was designed to treat opiate addiction. buprenorphine can treat pain, but when it is in suboxone, subutex or this new patch, somehow it only treats withdrawal pain. If you have true pain for a reason, I doubt the patch is going to be what you need. Now if you have major to minor craving and withdrawal, it should control that.
I just started the Butran's 7 Day Patch on Monday Night (5mcg/hr) and it DOES work for my pain. But, I am now also a little bit tired from it on day 2 and 3. Hope this wears off since I have a Spinal Cord Stimulator Implant that does NOT work for my foot pain and now I have to go through the removal procedure and not looking forward to it except, it will be nice to get the unit removed since it does actually hurt me now since a weight loss.
This patch is AMAZING!!! I haven't been truly pain free in over 10 years!!! Its a blessing... however... I'm a little upset that its supposed to last 7 days and my pain is slowly returning after 5 days... I'm only on 5's so I wonder if dr is gonna increase my dose or if this happens at any dosage given... is anyone else having this problem?
It happens at any dose. It's just like Fentanyl patch that's supposed to last three days but only lasts two. Same goes for pain pills that are supposed to last 6-8 hrs but only last about 2 hrs. I have the same dilemma.
I have been on 5mcg but-trans for 3 months, I have noticed that after about 3-4 days, the strength of the patch is not as effective. I just saw PMD and she increased dose to 10mcg. I will wait and see if the stronger patch has the same outcome.
I have chronic back pain and this patch is amazing.. I would get tagaderm dressing (adhesive patch) to out over them. I swim and this makes the patch virtually waterproof and work consistently for 7 days.
I have been on the patch for three years now. It does control pain. I have Fibromyalgia and it works wonderfully. I experience no side effects at all.
There is no " high".
Before being on the patch I had an extremely hard time with Fibromyalgia flairs . Since being on the patch I am a new person and have even started my own business.
Just FYI.
Hi my name is Gayle I have been using this patch for about 7 mos, starting off on the lowest dosage 15 mg and yesterday dosageh ad to be increased (20 mg is the highest dose) due to car accident which added more pain that i already have, i thinks its awesome also usually about the day before it's time to change the patch i really feel the pain coming on, but i also take a break thru pain medication Percocet 10/325 rarely do i use up all my pills before the month is up, I have used lots lots of patches but didn't stick , get wet would slide off so this patch is perfect for me.I like it hope it works for ecerbody... just because
I haven't heard much about this patch. But if it's similar to suboxone, it really isn't meant for controlling chronic pain. Suboxone is for getting people off of opiates and other substances in relative comfort. It controls the cravings and withdrawal symptoms. But heard it sucks at controlling bad pain. It's also addicting. So if you could avoid getting on this medication, I would do so. You said you were doing pretty good? Please don't jump to the patch if you have bad pain and it's addicting like suboxone is. I'll have to do some research on this. I'm very happy to hear the worst is over for you! Before you start this patch, double check on all of its' side effects. Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress BCboy. It's really good hearing success stories here.
best wishes,
chris
