I've taken Allegra (1/2 pill) for two days. Today I started having symptoms of urinary pressure and feeling like I have to go. When I do, there is very little and a feeling of pressure.
Can allegra cause urinary problems?

I am on day four taking Allegra. I started having urinary frequency yesterday. Glad to know other people have similar problems with Allegra. I would rather switch back to Zyrtec since I had no problem taking in the last 4-5 years with no side effects.

I am hoping that I can help others by sharing our experience with Allegra. My husband took it almost daily for a couple months to help with spring/summer allergies. He started to experience insomnia, fatigue, and frequent urination. Not knowing the cause of these ailments, we sought a blood test, which showed that his creatinine increased to 2.2, which meant that at his age, his kidney was only at 30% effective. His creatinine then quickly increased to 5.88 in mere few days, which meant that kidney function was at 9%. We learned that he suffered from urine retention - signals from the brain to the bladder were interfered by Allegra, and it seems that the bladder was no longer contracting to empty out the urine, allowing urine to back up into the kidney. This affected the kidney and its operation declined. We rushed him to the hospital for a catheter, IV, and medicine to lower his potassium.
If the kidney does not work, then waste / high potassium level would cause a heart attack. He stayed in the hospital for 6 days, upon discharge, his creatinine came down to 2.28. We are now two weeks from the nightmarish experience, and hubby is recovering well. We will get blood tests to monitor the creatinine, eat mainly low sodium, low phosphorus, low potassium vegetarian diet, get tests on his kidney next week to ensure we know everything we need to know to get him well, and seek best practice for the long term. Listen to your body. It tries to tell you when things are not well. Needless to say that we plan on never touching antihistamine. We will test the use of the natural herb Quercetin for allergies. It has great reviews. But I've read that if you are on high blood pressure medication, Quercetin might help lower your blood pressure as well; therefore, need to monitor and adj high blood pressure med accordingly when used in conjunction with Quercetin.

I have been taking Allegra for two weeks. 1 tab every night.
After 10 days started to have pressure, dull ache in bladder area. Started drinking extra water. Pressure and pain the same. I am now taking AZO for bladder pain and drinking cranberry. I had a similar issue with Claritin hence the switch.
Stopped taking and hopefully this will clear up soon.

Hi gsiegwald,
I have been taking Allegra since January 2013. I had a urinary tract infection from May - June 2013 and it took 4 urinary analyses, 1 urine culture, and 4 rounds of antibiotics to rid of the infection. Last week I was told I no longer have the infection, yet I still have a burning sensation during and after urination. Also, I still have increased frequency to urinate and my bladder muscles continuously feel contracted. I noticed the increased frequency as soon as I began taking it in January, though I associated it with Singulair or the nervousness of beginning a new internship. Well, I went off Allegra for one week - no increased frequency -- went off Singulair and back on Allegra -- hello frequency and burning again! So, I am going off of Allegra immediately after reading this article (kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/UrinaryRetention/, look under "medications"). I had no idea Allegra could be the culprit, but I will post again in a week to verify Allegra is the cause.

No side effects relating to urinary output/pressure have been stated as known side effects of Allegra.
Are you taking Allegra or Allegra D?

Allegra. I stopped taking it, drank cranberry juice, and the symptoms cleared up. No problems since then.
