What if there was a device that could stop you from getting pregnant as well as protect you from HIV?
Well, one day soon, there might be.
Researchers are currently working on a vaginal ring that releases both levonorgestrel (a contraceptive hormone) and dapivirine (an antiviral effective against HIV) that can be left in place for up to 90 days at a time.
Preliminary trials have indicated that the ring was well tolerated and blood levels of the two drugs reached levels adequate enough to prevent both pregnancy and reduce the risk of HIV infection.
If further trials prove successful, this device would provide an alternative to Truvada and oral contraceptives and condoms, the currently recommended regimen for combined conception and HIV prevention.
