Herceptin Injection

Herceptin injection (trastuzumab) is administered as an intravenous infusion.

  • Intravenous (IV) means Herceptin is given into your vein through an IV line. They can use a vein in your wrist, elbow or sometimes in the back of your hand.
  • Infusion means that the Herceptin goes into your bloodstream over a period of time, usually 90 minutes for the first time, and in some cases subsequent doses can be administered over 30 minutes.
  • Herceptin should NOT be given as a rapid intravenous (IV) injection, which is sometimes called an IV “push” or “bolus”.
  • Herceptin should be administered by a health care professional.

How is Herceptin injection given and stored?

Herceptin injection is supplied as lyophilized powder which needs to reconstituted into a solution for administration

150 mg Single-dose vial (Herceptin injection)

  • The Herceptin injection single-dose vial is a lyophilized powder that should be reconstituted with 7.4 mL of sterile water for injection.
  • Herceptin vials should be stored in the refrigerator until time of reconstitution.
  • Once reconstituted the resulting solution contains 21 mg/mL trastuzumab.
  • This does not contain a preservative so if not used immediately must be stored between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) and discarded after 24 hours if not used. Do NOT freeze.

420 mg Multiple-dose vial (Herceptin injection)

  • The 420mg multiple-dose vial is a lyophilized powder that should be reconstituted with 20 mL of bacteriostatic water for injection (BWFI), USP, containing 1.1% benzyl alcohol as a preservative.
  • Herceptin vials should be stored in the refrigerator until time of reconstitution.
  • Once reconstituted the resulting solution contains 21 mg/mL trastuzumab.
  • The reconstituted Herceptin should be stored in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8° C (36°F to 46°F) for up to a maximum of 28 days after this time it should be destroyed. Do NOT freeze.
