What is HVNI?
HVNI is a high-flow humidified oxygen delivery device. Your healthcare provider will use HVNI if you have respiratory failure. He or she may also use it to give you breathing support before you are intubated or extubated.
How does HVNI work?
It uses compressed air that is blended with oxygen by a machine to make a breathable gas. The machine also heats and humidifies the gas. The gas gets into your nose through heated tubing attached to a high-flow nasal cannula. The tubing keeps the gas at room temperature and prevents water droplets from forming.
What are the benefits of HVNI?
The high flow rate allows more oxygen to get absorbed into the lungs. The high rate also allows exhaled air to be forced out of your body. HVNI also lowers your breathing rate by decreasing the work your lungs have to do. You will be able to talk and eat while wearing the high-flow nasal cannula.
