What is hematospermia and what causes it?
Hematospermia is blood in your semen. The cause of hematospermia may be unknown, and it may go away on its own. It may be caused by an infection or a recent procedure such as a prostate biopsy or vasectomy. It may also be caused by being abstinent (no sexual activity) for a long time. Rarely, hematospermia may be caused by cancer of the prostate, bladder, or testicles.
How is hematospermia diagnosed?
Your healthcare provider will examine you. He or she may do a digital rectal exam to check the size and shape of your prostate. Your provider will ask about any medical conditions or recent procedures you have had. Your provider will also ask if you have any other signs or symptoms. You may need blood and urine tests to find the cause of your hematospermia. You may be referred to a urologist for more tests to find the cause of your hematospermia.
How is hematospermia treated?
Treatment depends on the cause of your hematospermia. You may not need any treatment. You may need antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection.

- You have trouble urinating.
- You see blood in your urine.
- You develop any new symptoms.
- You have questions or concerns about your condition or care.
