What is an ear abrasion?
An abrasion is a wound on your ear. Abrasions happen when your ear rubs against a rough surface. Your ear may bleed, swell, and be painful.
How is an ear abrasion treated?
Your healthcare provider will clean your ear abrasion. All foreign objects need to be removed to prevent an infection. Petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment may be placed on your ear to protect it from infection. Your healthcare provider may cover your ear abrasion with a bandage.
When should I call my doctor?
- You have a fever or chills.
- Your abrasion is red, warm, swollen, or draining pus.
- You have questions or concerns about your condition or care.
