Levobunolol ophthalmic Pregnancy Warnings
Levobunolol has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Some animal reproductive studies have revealed evidence of fetotoxicity in rabbits (increased number of fetal resorption sites after rabbits were given oral dosages of 1, 3, or 10 mg/kg/day), but not in rats. It appears that rabbits may be particularly sensitive to beta-adrenergic blocking drugs. The use of IV 0.05 mg/kg levobunolol in pregnant ewes has revealed evidence of maternal and fetal bradycardia and inhibition of isoproterenol-induced agonist activity in both ewe and fetus. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Levobunolol is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
Levobunolol ophthalmic Lactation Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of levobunolol into human milk. Topical timolol and other systemic beta blockers are excreted. With regard to the use of other beta-blockers, some experts recommend that nursing infants be closely observed for bradycardia and other signs of beta-blockade. The manufacturer recommends that caution be used when administering levobunolol to nursing women.
