Ganciclovir ophthalmic Pregnancy Warnings
Ganciclovir ophthalmic implant and ganciclovir ophthalmic gel have been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Reproduction studies in rabbits and mice have shown ganciclovir to be embryotoxic and teratogenic following intravenous administration of relatively high doses. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Ganciclovir ophthalmic implant and ganciclovir ophthalmic gel are only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
Ganciclovir ophthalmic Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of ganciclovir into human milk. The manufacturer of ganciclovir ophthalmic implant recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother. The manufacturer of ganciclovir ophthalmic gel recommends that caution be used when administering ganciclovir ophthalmic gel to nursing women.
