Deferiprone Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warnings

Deferiprone is also known as: Ferriprox

Deferiprone Pregnancy Warnings

Deferiprone has been assigned to pregnancy category D by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of embryofetotoxicity at doses lower than equivalent human clinical doses. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. If deferiprone is used during pregnancy or if the patient becomes pregnant during treatment, the patient should be advised of the potential hazard to the developing fetus. Women of reproductive potential should be advised to avoid pregnancy when taking deferiprone.

Deferiprone Breastfeeding Warnings

There are no data on the excretion of deferiprone into human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for adverse reactions in nursing infants, the manufacturer recommends that a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
