Acetylcysteine Pregnancy Warnings
A 1999 report concluded that acetaminophen overdose in pregnant women should be managed the same way as in nonpregnant patients and that acetylcysteine therapy was protective to both the mother and the fetus. There is no reported human pregnancy experience after the use of acetylcysteine as a mucolytic agent.
Acetylcysteine has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA. Animal studies have failed to reveal evidence of teratogenicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Acetylcysteine is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
Acetylcysteine Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of acetylcysteine into human milk. The manufacturer recommends that caution be used when administering acetylcysteine to nursing women.
