Sodium alginate consists mainly of the sodium salt of alginic acid, which is a mixture of polyuronic acids composed of residues of D-mannuronic acid and L-guluronic acid. Sodium alginate is obtained mainly from algae belonging to the Phaeophyceae (Ph. Eur.)
