Usual Adult Dose for Rabies Prophylaxis

Preexposure prophylaxis: 1 mL intramuscularly on days 0, 7, and 21 or 28

• Preexposure prophylaxis does not eliminate the need for additional therapy after a known rabies exposure.

Postexposure vaccination:

• Previously unvaccinated: 1 mL intramuscularly on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28
• Previously vaccinated against rabies: 1 mL intramuscularly on days 0 and 3

Comments:

• Immunizations series are usually started and completed with 1 vaccine product
• No studies are available on the efficacy or frequency of adverse events when switching products during treatment, however this product elicited protective antibody titers when used as a booster dose for persons who received a primary series with Human Diploid Cell Vaccine.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Preexposure prophylaxis: Anaphylactic reaction to any of the ingredients
Postexposure prophylaxis: None. In view of and almost invariable fatal outcome of rabies, no contraindications exist, including pregnancy

Administration advice:

• For intramuscular administration only.
• The deltoid is the preferred administration site for adults, and the anterolateral aspect of the thigh for infants and small children.
• Avoid the gluteal region as lower neutralizing antibodies may result.
• Unintentional intravascular administration may cause systemic reactions including shock.
• Use immediately after reconstitution.
