Using An Overhead Trapeze

GENERAL INFORMATION:

What is an overhead trapeze? An overhead trapeze is a triangle-shaped metal bar. It hangs from a metal frame, which is attached to the headboard and footboard of the bed. You may buy or rent an overhead trapeze device from a medical supply store.

Why do I need an overhead trapeze? You may need an overhead trapeze to help yourself move in bed. The trapeze can be used to lift yourself when you have a cast or other problems with your legs. You may need help moving in bed if you are weak, or cannot move one side of your body. A trapeze makes it easier for your caregiver to make your bed, and to help you with the bedpan. Follow your caregiver's instructions about using the overhead trapeze.

How do I attach the overhead trapeze to the bed? The following steps may help you install the overhead trapeze:

  • Get someone to help hook the heavy frame to the bed. Follow the instructions that come with the frame.

  • Make sure all of the bolts on the frame are tight.

  • Hang the triangle-shaped trapeze from the metal bar with the chain and bolts.

  • Check the length of the chain to make sure you can reach the trapeze easily.

CARE AGREEMENT:

You have the right to help plan your care. To help with this plan, you must learn about your health condition and how it may be treated. You can then discuss treatment options with your caregivers. Work with them to decide what care may be used to treat you. You always have the right to refuse treatment.
