Solatene (beta-carotene) "I have Erythropoietic Protophorphria. Solatene was prescribed to me in 1979 to take ten pills daily. It caused the palms of my hands to turn orangish yellow and I was able to stay in the sunlight for longer periods of time. After a few years my liver function levels skyrocketed and I retained fluid with rapid weight gain. I felt very sick. When I opened a new bottle of solatene it stank of TOLUENE. The bottle was not expired and I had my physician smell it. My Medical Center filed a formal complaint against Roche Pharmaceuticals because of the Toluene being added to medications. I am the reason why Solatene was discontinued."

Solatene (beta-carotene) "This was the drug of choice for Eythropoietic Protophorphria (EPP). It was discontinued because it also contained Toluene which causes liver failure and death. I was taking this and it did prolong my ability of sun exposure yet it also caused my liver function levels to skyrocket: making me very sick."
