"I'm a 56 year old postmenopausal woman who had two low trauma fractures: a bone in my left foot 6 weeks before my 40th birthday and my lower right tibia at age 53. From 2003 to present, I have increased dietary calcium, Vitamin D, magnesium and weight-bearing exercise. My first Dexascan in 2006 showed osteopenia. My most recent Dexascan in 2019 showed osteoporosis in my spine (-2.6). I started Forteo on July 30 and took my last dose on November 25. In the early morning of November 26, I went to the ER and found out that I had a kidney stone in my ureter. Worst pain I've ever felt. My Primary Care Physician and I both think it was caused by the Forteo as I'd never had a kidney stone before. I stopped taking Forteo and am researching other medications. As for the cost, Lilly has a program that those with private health insurance can qualify. It cost me $4 a pen. If it hadn't been for that, I never would have been able to afford it."

"I rated this drug a nine because of the weight gain in my midsection. Dr. Says I no longer have osteopenia or osteoporosis, however, I have gained 8 pounds in 10 months despite decreasing my calorie intake and increase in exercise."

"Mom 86 years old multiple vertebral compression fractures , loss of height 6-8 inches . Advanced lumbar osteoporosis , 45 degree deviation of spine ... Curves to left like a "C" . After six weeks on forteo.... Her spine is almost straight. She has gained weight after being in hospital on 15 day liquid diet for gall bladder removal. surgery. Still a little slumped at shoulders but standing straighter ... Breathing improved pain insignificant compared to before as pain was moderate or greater. Let's see after four months... Don't wait to start this Med if your spine is similar. Six orthopedics doctors never recommended it ... They only look for surgical cases...."

"I have been on Forteo for 19 months. For the last 3 months I have experienced extreme dizziness every few weeks (so dizzy I have to hold tightly onto anything for fear of falling for several minutes) and have gained 8 pounds . After a dizzy spell I am wiped out all day. I'm no longer sure the benefits are worth this."

"Have been on Forteo almost four months. At first I had mild nausea and my appetite was down. But now my body has adjusted to it. Compared to all the other medications I tried... the side effects were nonexistant! Hope to get a good report on my next bone density test."

"After 2 weeks on FORTEO I am experiencing severe headaches and neck pain. I have rarely gotten headaches before. I didn’t inject yesterday but I’m getting the neck pain this morning. Does anyone know how long it takes for Feorteo side effects to go away after discontinuing the med? The rheumatologist told me it only stays on the body 24 hours."

"I gave this medication a 9 despite some uncomfortable side effects because after 6 months of treatment my spine BMD has increased from 3.4 T score to 3.0 T (+ 8 %) but my hip has gotten 5% worse. I experienced a lot of nausea (especially about 2 hours after shot) but I also experienced about 15 pounds of weight gain. Shooting pains in my legs and arms occasionally and small bruising around injection spot sometimes. I am stopping medication for other reasons but I am happy about the 8% gain in my spine after 2 previous painful spinal fractures."

"I am 47 years of age. At 44 I had a hip replacement, at which time I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. I took alendronate and had crippling and extremely painful side effects. I used a walker or a cane at all times. I stopped the Forteo and within a week everything returned to normal but bone loss progressed. I then fractured 4 vertebrae, which was worse than being in labor 24/7 for months. I am on my 3rd month of Forteo and all back pain disappeared. I have experienced back pain since a major vehicle accident at age 17 and another at 20. My back has not been pain free (not even for a few minutes) until now. However, I now am experiencing hip and knee pain, which is quickly increasing in strength. I do not recall a fall that may have jarred them so assume it is Forteo. I will manage through though because I refuse to ever experience spinal fractures again."

"So far 3 months on Forteo injection daily. About 6 weeks ago I noticed my nails were chipping vertically so much so that I had to snip every nail down at different times until now my nails are all so short it looks like I have been biting them. I had always had lovely nails until Forteo but Lilly company denies that this is a side effect and my Osteo doc has never heard of this as a side effect. She says I might need more protein in my diet. I feel that I am not being taken seriously about this problem. And I also feel helpless. I have not been able to find the cause of my weakened nails . Please, does anyone else have this problem after taking Forteo."

"I’ve been on Forteo for six months. I stopped between months 2 and 3 due to heart palpitations. I then resumed after complete heart work up that said I was healthy. I initially had bad nausea and vomiting. Since starting up again, no problems with either. Will continue as I have lupus, and had a compression fracture at T8. I am 60, and have steroid induced osteoporosis."

"Got clipped hard by a horse and I'm looking at doing surgery with pins and plates. Been injecting Forteo for about 6 months. I have to believe that I would have been broken up more without Forteo but how will the surgical hardware hold up over time? I hear that Forteo fills in bone but with a more brittle material than what you had naturally and then loose all you gain at the end of 3 years if not replaced by another bone medication. Anyone experience surgery with hardware after starting Forteo?"

"I am a 48 yo female who was diagnosed with osteoporosis after a hip stress fracture and 2 pelvic fractures. I had a 2nd bone density scan after taking Forteo . At that time, my diagnosis was upgraded from osteoporosis to osteopenia. The drug is working, and I don’t seem to have any side effects. (My hair is becoming much thicker and more curly. I’m not sure if this is related to the drug or not.) Despite the positive effect Forteo is having on my bones, I am nervous about being on this powerful drug. It seems very unnatural."

"I began taking Forteo on August 25, 2022. After four doses I began to experience painful side effects, including severe leg cramps while both awake and asleep, pain in my knees and ankles, headaches, and a stiff neck. I messaged my doctor, and she suggested injecting the Forteo every other day for a few days. So, I skipped August 30th and September 1st, but I did inject the Forteo on Wednesday August 31st and on Friday, September 2nd. Then, on the afternoon of Saturday September 3rd, approximately 16 hours after my last injection, during a casual walk, I experienced a sudden pain in my right leg and knee so severe that I was unable to walk without a cane or walker. Since then, despite not having taken any additional Forteo, the extreme pain has persisted. I sincerely hope that it will start to abate soon. After taking only seven doses over the last thirteen days, and none for the last four days, I am still experiencing pain so severe that I have difficulty walking. No more for me."

"I started forteo in April 2018, almost 6 months ago. I have had osteoporosis since age 52 (now 63). My body could not tolerate the medicines, so I didn't take them. However earlier this year when my Dexa scan again showed a huge decline so I agreed to take Forteo. I take the injection before bedtime and very rarely feel any nausea. My legs do ache but I'm not sure if it is all from forteo as I try to walk 3-5 miles 5 days a week and recently added some weight bearing exercises. I have not had any noticeable hair loss as others have reported. This is the only medicine I take. I do take supplements: one-a-day vitamin, Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, magnesium, and calcium. The copay card from the manufacturer helps tremendously with the cost. I am so thankful to have it. Good luck to all of you in your decision and your battle of osteoporosis."

"I took Forteo for the maximum of 2 years and had no side affects. I also had a good result on my Dexa Scan. The problem is the Dr didn't put me on anything afterwards and I lost it all. Now I am entertaining Prolea but afraid after reading all the side affects. I do think Forteo is a good drug..."

"I have been on Forteo 2 months now, I had 2 spinal compression fractures, 4 fractured ribs, right side and then I hollered at a dog, another fracture. MRI said osteoporosis, scoliosis, degenerative disc disease, severe osteoarthritis, SURGERY. My bones were mush. I'm suppose to do forteo for 2 to 3 months. Now I have bad stomach aches, hoarse voice, shortness of breath, dizzy, confusion, Charlie horses in legs, and trouble sleeping. Its a complicated, risky surgery. I hope this is all worth it, I feel awful, and crooked badly."

"I finished last dose two days ago. No side effects at all. Hip and femoral head had (6.9% and 6.8% increase respectively). Lumbar spine 3.3%. Considering the direction I was going, and knowing that yearly bone loss with age occurs normally, I was very pleased with the results. I felt the benefits outweighed the risks, and I would not hesitate to recommend Forteo based on my experience. Prior Actenol and Altevia user. Prolia is probably next best."

"I have osteoporosis due to long-term prednisone use. I tried Fosamax and got severe pain from it. I tried Reclast, which improved my bone mass density, but I kept getting fractures. I had over 20 rib fractures and a bunch of vertebral compression fractures. With Prolia, the fractures got worse. I have been on Forteo for 2 years and I am on it again for 2.5 years. My Dexa scans have improved, but more importantly, no fractures. I have had no noticeable side effects either."

"37 year old male, diagnosed worth osteoporosis and osteopenia. Had a long spinal fusion 3 months ago, and have been taking forteo for about 4-5 months now. For the last month and a half, I've just felt all around crappy. Mental fog, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dull headache almost constantly, throat feels like it's swelling shut, feels like a rock in my throat, speaking out loud is becoming labored... I am taking pain meds due to the surgery and wasn't sure if those were the cause of this. After reading the other reviews, it's pointing more towards the forteo. Very interesting. I'll be seeing my doc next week, and I also sent a message to the bone doc that prescribed the forteo. I'll update this post when this is resolved.."

"After injecting Forteo each morning for 1 month I experienced an ill feeling in my stomach. I switched to night time doses and felt better, then, after 4 months my migraines started and happened every morning for one week until I stopped injecting the medicine. One week later I was asked to start the drug again and within 2 hours another migraine hit. I stopped taking the drug and have felt so much better. I'm now on a cluster drug, that is supposed to help, once a year."

"Hi this Jas again. I had posted my review on June 7, 2019. I am so distraught and upset. If there was anything less than zero I would give it to Forteo. I am still recovering. My legs, knees, feet and ankles were so badly affected by Forteo, that it has taken all my strength and will power to fight from becoming crippled. The manufacturer and the prescribing doctors show no responsibility while prescribing this drug. They pretend the effects are not because of Forteo. In fact my prescribing doctor at Shands cooly told me to start using a walker. I have severe bone pain and loss of height from Forteo. I am waiting for a miracle. Please do not take Forteo injections."

"I injected myself for two years. A lot of pain in legs and an overall weird feeling. It's a heavy duty drug. After two years I had no improvement. It was a complete waste. I have hypothyroidism. I don't know. Sometimes I thought I was going bonkers. Anyhow, now I am taking Roloifene. I've been on it for 2 years. No side affects except sweating at night, which after Forteo seems like a cake walk. However, since I've had all the drips and the injections there is no hope for me but Roloifene. No other drugs left for me to take or docs haven't recommended any. So, I don't know what to say other then Forteo did not work at all for me."

"I am a 66 year old man who after 5 years showed NO improvement in the hip with Oral Bisphosphanates. 2 years ago I had a fragility fracture & broke my hip! I also had a vitamin "D" deficiency. With Forteo I got a 21% increase in BMD in my hip! After two years I went on Reclast to keep the gains of Forteo. The only downside to Forteo is if you travel it must be refrigerated wherever you go. Forteo worked for me."
