Can you crush furosemide to take?

Hello,
I’m an ICU nurse, and we crush meds and administer in applesauce quite frequently for our patients. One word of caution: never crush a medication that is extend release.
Always remember, you can call any Pharmacist, and they will be happy to help you. Your medication bottles will usually have a little sticker on them stating... Do Not Crush.

I can't think of any good reason why not. Furosemide, is not coated, is not embedded in some polymer matrix (inert fillers are mostly starch and talc) and can be taken without regard to food. Apple sauce is way less acidic than your stomach making it extremely unlikely that anything will happen to it when crushed and mixed.

Also meds that are extended release or timed released and meds that have a coating or gel like I would strongly advise not to crush these meds
