I have a low testosterone level and have been prescribed a cream to use for it to be applied to my vagina area. Is this normal and do you recommend it? I kinda got a red flag when my doctor told me that a very few pharmacies in our area would have it. thanks

This is a follow up question request... in the usa... what do I ask my doctor for? Not counseling or better diet or more sleep as so many websites recommend. But some form of testosterone cream or patch to get some energy and hopefully the big o back!!! What do I ask for and how likely are they to prescribe it??? 56 female..

You may wish to research menopause.Org.au and the international guidelines for testosterone use in women, australia apparently has an approval for 1% cream applied to the thigh in cases meeting diagnostic criteria. After reviewing this perhaps discuss with your doctor. Best wishes.

Yes and yes. I'm going to write abook about the lack of hormones after menopause. .02% compounded testosterone cream, 60g, apply thin layer daily to inner arm. AMAZING results in less than 1 week. Great orgasms, good libido, increased desire to work out, better muscle maintenance, less fat at waist. Only downside I have experienced is 2-3 facial hairs that need to be waxed or plucked. I saw my GYN this morning and I Iam going on the cream. I had to call the compounding pharmacy which receptionist said it's the only pharmacy they recommend highly trusted! I'm happy with that.
My doctor told me to rub the cream on my inner thigh's.
I Go back in two months to talk with doctor see how everything is going and bloodwork again.

I am 60 years old and my husband is 10 years younger. I was tired and fed up with being nominated for an Oscar every time we made love. I had always been keen on sex but after the menopause all desire disappeared. So for the last three months I have been rubbing in to my inner thigh 1% testosterone cream that I buy from Australia. So far my libido has not returned to pre-menopause levels but is much increased. I am not sure if my hair is getting thinner or if I am just paranoid, ditto hairs on chin! I am 48 and have been without a period for over a year now. I knew I was in menopause because of the flashes and sweats plus the lack of sleep and low libido and super low clitoral sensitivity. I went to my dr and she checked my hormones which proved menopause. I now have a prescription for bio identical hormone cream. The pharmacist ask a load of questions about my symptoms then fixed up my cream. I use 2 pumps a night on my inner thigh. I rotate sides and occasionally use my forearms. I was hopeful this would cure my sweats and flashes but I was afraid to hope for the cure to my low libido. It took a few weeks to even tell it was working but gradually I noticed I wasn't sweating a hundred times a day. The next thing I noticed was a WHOLE LOT more feeling "down there" (i attribute this to the testosterone probably).
I still don't sleep well but it's much better than it was before so I'll take the good if that's the only bad. All in all I'm so glad I went this route than the estrogen/progesterone pills. To me this is a blessing for sure. I hope your feeling better soon and get all the good also!
Oh also not many pharmacies compound. The closest to me was 60 miles away. They mail it to me thank goodness! Insurance don't usually pay for compounds but mine was only 40$ a month

Sorry. It took me a few weeks to notice I was sleeping harder. I also noticed gradual (only looking back) noticed my energy level creeped up. I do feel better after also taking vitamin D. I have not lost any belly weight even after trying. I hope you feel better. I have been in it since last August. I might need to go up on the dose. Take it in the morning cause it might keep u up at night. Please post any updates. I can't find much info about this

Wow. Thanks for telling me about Walgreens, I am going to check around now. My libido is still not back but I prob am not using enough, I am scared of hair loss but I might have to up it and see what happens. Hope it works for you. You should sleep better in about a week.

Hi, I have never been a believer of vitamins but after taking testosterone and only sleeping harder and more hair loss, they told me my vitamin D level was low. After researching and finding magnesium sterate was bad I found Garden Of Life vitamin D. Came up so well the Dr asked me what brand I was on. Also, Pure Encapsulation was great on magnesium. Never thought either was working until 6 months later I had a Dr appt and they asked me what brand because my numbers went up so much. Both brands are great!! I started Pure Encapulations Phytobalance. In my opinion hasn't really worked. Dr said it works for 90% until it suddenly stops working. And it will suddenly stop working she said. Testosterone us great for sleep but take too much or put it wrong place on body and it will cause hair loss, clitueus enlarged and boobs enlarged (no ladies not good). Don't put it on at night, do it during the morning, can cause excitement. Put it only inside leg , back of leg or inside fore arm. Good luck, I can't find much info on it

I have been getting bioidentical testosterone pellet implants for two years. They are very expensive and require a medical procedure and I really want to find a bioidentical alternative. I asked my dr and she said there wasn't one. Now I read all these posts on a topical cream for testosterone. Is it bioidentical?
I also have an estridol patch and take an oral pil of progesterone.
I would like to switch to a Dr who will prescribe testosterone creme in CT. Does anyone know of a source?

My OBGYN Dr prescribed the cream. 2-4 clicks either morning or night. Do not put it on your vagina (can cause your cylteras to become enlarge and hurt). Also no where around your breasts. Inside of legs or inside of lower arm. I noticed in about 3 weeks I was sleeping harder. Gradual more energy but that's all I have noticed. No weight loss. I will continue taking it but not the "miracle " cure I was hoping for. It's expensive $75-$100 and insurance doesn't cover it. Has to be a compound pharmacy so Walmart and Walgreens don't have it. Good luck. Definitely seek out to get it!!!

Sorry, I forgot to add that I have been taking 4000 IU of vitamin D. (2 capsules ) per day. I never thought it was working u til I ran out 2 weeks ago and I noticed a huge difference. Please take Vitamin D!!! I use Garden of Life brand. It's expensive but works

Sorry that I’m just reading this. Hopefully you’ve gotten help by now. But if not, call a compounding pharmacy in your area or the nearest one, they should be able to tell you what doctors in your area prescribe them. Holistic doctors usually prescribe them, but they’re not covered by insurance.
I’ve been on compounded Estrogen and Progesterone for over 20 years now. My system changed last year as I got closer to 60, so I just saw a holistic doctor who checked my hormone levels. All of them came back as very low. So, he just changed my dosages and formulations, and added in Testosterone and DHEA, and had them all put into one cream. I just started on it last night. I already noticed a slight difference for the better today.

HELP! I was also just recently prescribed compounded testosterone cream (2 clicks) and my OB-GYN said to apply it nightly at bedtime and to apply to external labia/vulvar area. I don't expect immediate results, of course (have been battling exhaustive fatigue, no energy, low libido, brain fog, weight gain, non-restive sleep even after 10-11 hours nightly for YEARS) but did not expect to experience immediate sleepness nights ? As soon as I applied the cream, I went to bed, hoping to fall asleep. Usually I have no problems at all and am asleep within a minute or so. The 2 nights in a row that I used the crème this week, I had difficulty falling asleep and *staying* asleep. Also had anxiety-filled dreams. That never happens.
My question: should I NOT be applying to the vulvar/genital area and/or at night, as this could be causing me not to sleep?

I am 56. Done with menopause. For the first few years I used HRT bio identical estrogen/progesterone compounded cream. Did nice things. Nothing spectacular, but kept me sane. Years 54-55 I went on Sotto Pelle HRT pellets. I learned that to be solely on estrogen after menopause isn't the way to balance hormones post menopause. Need to take the right (based on lab work and doctors knowledge) combination of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone - which the pellets are. Sotto Pelle is an amazing ride, but not for me. For half of the 3-4 month pellet cycle, I felt like a 16 year old boy, the other half of the time, I was back normal no-sexy self. But I did sleep well, and I was always in a good mood, no weight gain and no hot flashes. A lot of my friends have super big success with Sotto Pelle and it's very convenient (but pricey). I stopped the pellets because I moved to an area that doesn't have them available.
I also had a total hysterectomy in December last year and that really set me back. My last shot, after the surgery, took 6-8 weeks to kick in, whereas prior to surgery, I felt the pellets within a few days. For the past 6 months I have been on an HRT pill patch and cream system. Patch for Estradoil (estrogen), vaginal cream (testosterone) and pill (progesterone). Within 7 days of the program I felt better, some sex drive back - it's not on all the time. - but it's back and it's good. I'm still having some hot flashes, but we're also have very hot nights out. I've lost a few pounds, which I am positive I gained when I was not on any HRT (for about 4 months while I moved and found new doctors). Hope this helps ... be well, be happy, be nice ...

I am 56 and take bio identical vaginal cream that has estrial and testosterone. In the past 12 months my hair has been falling out and my blood work shows very high dhea levels. I do not take dhea supplements or any other hormomes. Does anyone know if the cream is raising dhea an high levels cause hair loss

never use testosterone at nite. it wires you up like coffee. surprised your dr did not mention. estrogen and progesterone morning and nite, testosterone ONLY in morning. research it. and vaginally is fine, two or three times a week. i have been doing bhrt therapy six years now.

You should apply Testo in the morning as it actually gives you energy and excites you.
My experience is that testosterone is difficult to get the correct levels. It takes a little time to show effect, and if you take too much while waiting for it to work it suddenly is too much and you have issues. Everybody is different. If I get too much I get heart palpitations.
I normally have applied it to my inner arms, and it doesn't seem to work much. I came upon this page today from googling testosterone applied to vulva, as I tried that today. Very interesting, I apllied a little less than normally and I could feel the heat and tingle.
I also read on a different site that a good place to put it is on the perineum skin between anus and vagina. As that will help strengthen muscle tone, thicken skin and all the other good stuff us peri/post menopausal women need.
I also learned that perhaps I shoudl apply less and only once or twice a week.
My experience from when I have taken too much and experience heart palpitations it takes a few weeks to wear off. So for us women we need very little and it takes time to work, so don't over apply and also it takes time to leave body completely.
I have actually had more effect by taking DHEA on my libido. But same again, too much gives heart palpitaion for me. 25 mg daily was too much. So now I take it once in a while. But I should take it regulary twice a week.
I am also on bioidentical HRT taking smallest dose estradiol as a patch and a progesterone capsul 100 mg from day 15 to 24 of cycle. I am 54 and in peri but still OK thanks to the pacth, the progesterone and a little DHEA and or testo as I please. I chose how much to take of teh DHEA and Testo.
I started with taking DHEA before estrogen, and after one week I noticed better sleep, more energy, easier to get up in the morning, more assertive. I also noticed better libido and a much more sensitive (in a very positriive way) clit. But as I took it it built up and became too much and I got over excited and it became harder to sleep and get rest and I had heart palpitations.
My point is, I think Testo or DHEA is great and recomend it, just be patient, use little over time and see how it works. I fint Testo har to dose, and found DHEA easier to use. I used Douglas lab microgenized 25 mg capsules. I guess taking that daily forst week, and then twice or three times a week is ok.

Only thing I will add is my Dr told me that she has several patients use too much cream because their energy level is thru the roof but they are loosing hair at the widows peak. I fear hair loss so if I ever notice that I will back it down. Also she was very very clear to me NOT to put it on my vagina and not to get it around my breasts. So do not put it on my inner arm under my arm pit. The pharmacist also confirmed what she said. I can tell u my Cletus swelled up a tad and hurt for a few days but that went away. It's definitely helped me sleep harder.

Well, I've ended up using 2% testosterone cream, topical not vaginal application, and it took effect immediately! What a difference 2 clicks makes!!! My energy level jumped immediately and my libido is creeping back. I also use an estrogen patch (low dose .0375mg) and started using 200mg of progesterone (oral) before bed and I'm feeling good and sleeping like a baby again. Thanks to hormone replacement, I feel like ME again! Go for it ladies...

Really? Wonderful! My life has changed significantly since my original post back in 2012. Time for me to really pursue this. I have a prolapsed bladder, incredible belly fat, and no libido. I have a rare allergy and there is a pharmacy close by that has a small compounding pharmacy, and they compound 8 medications for me. I am 45 and started having menopause symptoms but my blood work came back normal. Anxiety, sleep is horrible (wake up all night) pee every hour, no sex drive, hot flashes soaking the bed, periods never consistent, stomach weight gain, heartburn 24/7. All of this is not normal for me, that's why I started seeking answers. Which my personal belief is just because your within a wide range doesn't mean it's normal for your body. Anyway, got my GYN to prescribe testosterone cream. Had to go to a compound pharmacy and insurance doesn't cover it. Around $70.00. Pharmacist said specifically do not put it on my vagina or around my breasts, so not around my inside upper arm. Been on it 2.5 weeks and the only 2 things that I just noticed is my Cleturis is very sore and 2 nights ago I started sleeping very hard at night (YAY, LOVE). I have not noticed any muscle changes, breast size, anxiety is still there and other symptoms but it's only been 2.5 weeks.
I also can't find much about information. I will come back and post anymore progress I see because I hope it's helpful to a least one person. Please feel free to ask me questions, I am not shy.

well, I was just prescribed progesterone pills, testastrome cream and estrogen cream. Those last two, to be inserted in vagina with a syringe in the morning at same time. My dr told me if you put the creams on your skin you will grow hair in that area. Vaginally it gets absorbed faster, will strengthen your vaginal wall also. but must not have sex until after four hours so it does not get on man. Another reason not to put on skin, if a loved one hugs you or comes in contact with that cream, it is very potent, it will go into their blood stream. This is my third day, I will let you know how it goes. Apparently, my vitamin D level was very low and my estrogen level was non existent. I am 64 but had to have an emergency hysterectomy when I was 40, and never took any form of HRT

I've been using a compounded testosterone cream 2%, for about 4 years. I apply it to my vaginal area during the week and to inner thighs on weekends. I am post menopausal and was losing muscle tone and the libido Was totally gone! I will take this forever because I've had nothing but good from it. Libido is through the roof!

Give it a couple of weeks. Also if you put it on your vulva your clitoris will enlarge and become pleasantly sensitive. If you work out in about 6 months you will notice beautiful muscle definition and you will be stronger. I love everything about it !

I've been using testosterone pellets for the last 6 months and finally quit after being fed up with the roller coaster ride... the highs were scary good and the lows were depressing, not healthy either way! Trying to decide whether to get the compounded cream or pills now... and the pills apparently can negatively affect the liver, so it looks like the cream is the way to go... Tanya7164, you've been using the cream for a month now, what's your take on it? You like it as much as Ibryanwf? Anyone else out there care to comment?

I am 53 and I am just at the start of menopause. My last AF was April, 2014. I was having insomnia, anxiety, hot flashes & loss of libido a year ago while in peri-menopause. I have been taking Prometrium (progesterone) and using Compounded Testosterone cream (turn 4 clicks on bottle & apply on pubic bone) for a year. I guess my libido is up a bit from zero but, I have a dead beat husband so I have no clue if it works, lol! I am also on Wellbutrin (was on Lexipro) and I believe it made me gain weight. Something is making me gain weight. I am tiny 5'3" 124 but, use to weigh 115 a year ago. I also seem to have more facial hair (light hair) that I never had before. Again, don't know if it is the cream or the actual menopause. I was in pretty firm good shape. Now I notice loss of elasticity in my abs and thighs. Menopause sucks big time... I was hoping Compound Testosterone was going to be my miracle fix :-(

Hey... I know it's been a WHILE since anyone else has posted, but I just got my T-Cream today from the compound pharmacy. I'm nervous but excited. I was instructed to apply directly to the clitorous and vulva until I start feeling a sensation and then apply to my inner thigh & rotate from that point on. I just turned 40 two weeks ago & have been through menopause already, unfortunately. Because of multiple illnesses including 2 diff cancers, I've lost both ovaries and one adrenal gland (amongst other stuff). And that's not including my sex drive that was lost somewhere in the wild wild west... so I'm praying that I'll have `some` sort of positive relationship with this cream soon... I know my husband is its biggest cheerleader and he can't wait either. Is there any advice or 'heads-up' anyone could share or kindly offer? All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks ♡♡

I am 62, currently on HRT... a capsule form of Biest 1.5, Progesterone 200 and Testosterone 2 (evening), Estrogen and Testosterone cream for vaginal application for dryness (evening as needed), 2% Testosterone cream, to be applied on the clitoris daily if desired to aid in libido. (I have yet to apply, but anxious to experience results!) According to my Compounding Pharmacist, these are very low levels of Testosterone compared to what men would use (10%) so they are completely safe to use in the vaginal area. I have read where other women are using this cream on other areas... you should use as prescribed or consult your professionals as I did. Another interesting note from my gyno was that coconut oil is a great lubricant in place of KY jelly, as it does not dry out. Who knew?

I used a compounded creme for 3 months. Got ZERO out of it. I was then switched to Testim gel - using just a pea sized amount every day. Again for 3 months. Nothing. It didn't help and all I got was a huge cystic zit like the kind I used to get in my 20's. Testosterone is not a miracle drug and does not help every woman. The hormonal system is very, very complex and some convert into other hormones and when taking estradiol, progesterone and testosterone, the levels need to be titrated just right to get the desired affect and yet avoid side effects and risks. It's not as simple as just slapping on some cream. I'm glad that some have had good experiences with it, but it does not work for everyone and it is something you have to be very careful with.

My natural path recommended 0.5 to 1 g cream topically behind the knees 3 x a week. I am so afraid to use testosterone. I have tried it once before and it made me break out horribly, I can't remember if it was a cream or not. It's being recommended for my non-existent libido

I originally got the testosterone shot and it worked beautifully! High energy and high libido. About 2 weeks ago they said to start the cream and put it on the underside of my arms because that would absorb quickly because of the thin skin. It is NOT working like the shot. I am literally itching my crotch off! I can barley even wear panties, it itches that badly. the shot did not do this to me. Anyone else have this experience? I am calling the doctor on Monday!

My brother has been compounding my hormones since 2000. I just saw a doctor who ordered blood tests to check my hormone levels, primarily because my hair won't stop falling out. The doctor's office faxed the results to my brother and she had prescribed testosterone cream on the labia. I didn't like that answer and now the doctor is in Australia until mid January. The way my brother explained it is that the testosterone will increase the libido, it will build up muscle tissue and do several other positive things. It is not dangerous to apply to the labia. I am going to call the office and ask that another physician explain the results to me. Compounding HRT is the way to go. The pharmacist can closely duplicate the hormones naturally produced in your body when menopause causes them to produce less.
It eliminated the migraines I had after my hysterectomy when the gyny only wanted to prescribe synthetic hormones that are no where near as accurate to the hormones my body was producing. I hope this made sense. My brother suggests I try applying the testosterone this way to see how it compares to the troches I was taking. I don't like it but I totally trust my pharmacist.

Am new to this site and have just read dolphin girl and Sbrenner because today I was prescribed the compound to help build up my walls inside in order with a prolapsed bladder so they can then in a few weeks time after renewing the tissue, insert a pessary. Supposed to help with libido too hopefully. I am trying to avoid surgery. This post is 2 years old, I'd be so grateful if you two women or anyone else who used this with a past history, could tell me NOW how you made out and if you had any long term side effects and if hindsight is 20/20 WOULD you do this again? Just like tlcandmore, I take bio-identical hormones. I get my blood or urine tested and my testosterone, estrogen, etc. is adjusted. I had testosterone cream once and was told to rub it in different spots everyday. Those included my stomach, inner thigh, an inside of my arm. I would NOT put it anywhere near your vagina unless it's supposed to treat that area specifically. I get these hormones from a compounding pharmacy through my gyno. Please see a gyno before you use that stuff around your vagina. If I was told to rub it in different areas each day, I'm assuming it may irritate the skin if applied to the exact same area.

It was my gynecologist that prescribed the cream and told me to rub it on the outside of my vagina three times a week for 8 weeks and then come back. I haven't seen much info on the internet about rubbing it in that area, so it confuses me.
My testosterone level was the only hormone that was low, so I don't take any other hormones.

Hmmm, I don't know what to say. I don't want to say your gyno is wrong so you should ask more questions or at least ask one of your other doctors what their opinion is. Again, why rub it on/around your vagina, unless there is something wrong with that area? You need to know why.

The reason for applying it to your vaginal area is because the tissue is more absorbent than anywhere else in the body. You will absorb a more correct level of your dose by applying it to or around the vagina. This is a very very common practice for hormone therapy. It does not have anything to do with treating a specific area, it has everything to do with absorbtion. The reason for some doctors telling you to "switch it up" in reference to where to apply it is because it stimulates hair growth, thus switching up the areas reduces your chance of hair folical stimulation as the same area is not receiving the dose everytime. The reason for rubbing it into your vaginal area is because it is easily absorbed into the body there because of the mucose membrane, very thin tissue in that area.

Hi Dolphin Girl,
I am on bio-identical hormones that come in cream or pill form. I too was prescribed testosterone and had no problems with it. The reason that not very many pharmacies carry it is because they usually have to be a compounding pharmacy. The pharmacy that makes mine looks at my hormone levels and then produces a cream specifically for the amount and kind of hormone I need. Does that make sense? If not, let me know and I will try to explain it better.

I like the idea your pharmacy looks at your levels then goes from there to make the compound .
I have a great pharmacy but I don't think they look at levels and decide what or how much I need .
I wish I would trust them more than the dr
