This person is taking famotidine 20mg plus omerprazole 20mg is it not applied for the same thing, heartburn or acid reflux
Can a patient take Famotidine and omeprazole for reflux and heartburn or is it too much?

Both medicines are used to treat heartburn but they work in slightly different ways.
Famotidine belongs to a class of drugs called H2 blockers. These drugs cause the stomach to make less acid. They are effective in patients with mild to moderate heartburn.
Omeprazole belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Proton pump inhibitors shut off the stomach's acid production and are very effective for more severe symptoms but can take longer to work.
Proton pump inhibitors should not be combined with an H2 blocker. The H2 blocker can prevent the proton pump inhibitor from working

Omeprazole is a PPI a proton pump inhibitor they turn off the pumps in the stomach that make acid which causes the symptoms of GERD reflux indigestion burning pain Pepcid,Zantac Tagamet are H2 blockers they block the acid made by the cells of the stomach. They are in different
drug categories. Pepcid acts faster so takeone 60 mins before a meal and or at bedtime or if ur having a severe episode of burning stabbing Indigestion. The Omeprazole is generic Prilosec other PPI are Nexium
Prevacid they take longer to work and last longer so both will help. If it doesn't get better in 2-3 months and it feels like food is
sticking when u swallow or gets stuck u mite have an ulcer esophagitis a fungal infection and would need to have an EGD it is a Endoscopy they look in your stomach and esophagus then can dialate your esophagus if it is constricted by scarring from too much acid they use balloon to dilate the esophagus stretch it to normal size. It can be chronic some people need it done yearly or they might have a hiatal hernia which is an abnormality of the opening of the stomach esophagus some people have to have surgery but usually these symptoms are GERD which stands for Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease. EGD stands for Esophagogastroscopy they look into your esophagus stomach with a lighted scope that u swallow u will be sedated for the test they will spray your throat with a numbing spray b4 they insert the scope it is like just swallowing food the drs blow in air to open up the esophagus and stomach and u can see the Upper GI Tract on video. They can also do a colonoscopy with a seperate scope u have to drink a colon prep to clean yourself out. Hope this answer helps people understand. One more thing they often biopsy to do a h pylori test which is a bacteria that can cause ulcers it can be treated with antibiotics and other meds. Ulcers are formed from too much anti-inflammatories and hpylori. Stress and spicey foods do not
cause ulcers they just make ulcers worse. I am a RN I worked in The GI field for 20 years. I hope this info is helpful.

I was told by my GI to take omeprazole in the morning for the day symptoms, and Famotidine in the evening for the night\early morning symptoms. So, it IS ok to take both.

That sounds like a good idea. I was taking pepsid in tne morning but will switch it to night
