My Dr. prescribed this a few days ago for my stomach cramps, excessive gas and bloating along with my long hisotry of chronic constipation labled slow mobility, IBS with constipation, and without any known cause. (Idiopathic). Does this medication act as a laxative because of the relaxing elements of this drug to the colon?
How does Dicyclomine 10mg affect constipation?

Hi Linday11, I take Bentyl(Dicyclomine) 10mg I have ulcerative colitis. No it does not act as a laxative. I take it for my stomach cramps too. It will not give you diarea, ok.
When I had bad constipation the doctor gave me a stool softner... dulcasate sodium covered by insurance. I take a Fiber supplement now and dont need the extra stool softner. Hope you feel better.

Bentyl can cause drowsiness and dizziness. It causes me some drowsiness.

Dicyclomine is used to treat intestinal hypermotility, the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) (also known as spastic colon). It relieves muscle spasms and cramping in the gastrointestinal tract by blocking the activity of acetylcholine on cholinergic (or muscarinic) receptors on the surface of muscle cells. It is a smooth muscle relaxant.
